“Unexpected gem”

We stayed for a week, the weather was OK, but some rain. Having stayed in The Lakes for 30 years, I was really surprised and impressed by how much walking there was around Alston. Chose the Calf Shed due to its proximity to the Pennine Way which provided an excellent morning and evening dog walk. We visited Hadrian's Wall in several places, Lambley Viaduct which was amazing, and Allenheads village - also amazing. The village of Alston had a good variety of essentials and individual craft and quirky shops, the people were friendly and the local pub by the Market Square had some gorgeous beers. The partially restored and disused railway (South Tyne) provided easy flat walking which my older and short-legged dog was very grateful for.
The Calf Shed was fine for a couple, the dogs were welcome and although it has everything you need, there was never the feeling (which you can get with some holiday places) that muddy paws and dirty boots were a big no no. The owners were very chatty and pleased that we found plenty to do.
I liked it so much I'm going to recommend that my mum has a stay there soon.

Fantastic setting, a one mile walk into Alston through a lovely countryside with a view to the Yorkshire moors in the distance and the lovely cobblestone town, dog friendly area, the cottage is very cosey for two we would definitely go again, good value for money.

“Very warm and cosy”
Reviewed 1 June 2014 for a stay in May 2014

The apartment was very warm and cosy. The place was clean and tidy, and we enjoyed our time exploring this area.
The living area was quite small, but the kitchen had everything you need, and it was good to get an apartment where you could use the washing machine and dryer.
