“Great Value”
Reviewed 30 May 2012

This is an all-inclusive adults only resort. It is well maintained and has very good service. Dollar for dollar a very nice place to stay. It has a beautiful beach, a nice pool, and 3 hot tubs, each progressively hotter than the first. It has its drawbacks though. Liquor and beer selection are limited. The restaraunts, while good, are limited in choice. We found the Italian place to be the best. Big drawback for us was that they only had Pepsi products. If you drink sodas at all and don't care for Pepsi, it could be a long week. The pool was nice but doesn't have a swimup bar. It would be nice if they could retro fit one in there. The place is about 1.25 hours south of the airport and nothing else around it. I happened to like this but you should be aware of it.. one might ask why I say it is a very good place with these small drawbacks, it is the value of the resort. It was much more affordable than other places we have visisted. So if you don't mind Pepsi products and limited liquor choices and the isolation, then this is the place to be.

Room Tip: You don't typicaly stay in your room and I wouldn't get roped into an upgrade.

My husband and I stayed at the CRT May 19 - 26. This was our 4th visit. As always the staff at the CRT are exceptional. We found that even the VeraClub members were friendly, even though there was a language barrier, they smiled and included us in any activities.

The room was comfortable, we must have had a new mattress on our bed - it was VERY comfortable this time. I know in the past it seemed pretty hard, but this time it seemed even better. The maid kept our room so clean and always did the cute towel art on the bed each day. I didn't notice a smoke smell right away, but I did after we got home. My clothes, and luggage reaked of cigarette smoke.

The restaurants and bars served wonderful drinks and great meals. We were there for 7 nights and never got bored with the meals. The barmaids who work the pool area were great and it was nice not to have to get up and walk to the bar for a drink.

We missed running into our Trip Advisor friends, but I didn't exactly know how to go about locating you all.

We love staying at the CRT because of the cutomer oriented staff and the fact that this is a laid back, comfortable resort that fits all of our needs.

Thanks again, for a GREAT vacation!

Room Tip: We always choose a top floor room, then you don't have noise from the floor above you. I also t...

Arrival
Immigration and Customs were fairly typical, through the process in about an hour.
Avoid Time Share sharks at all cost; they even have official looking uniforms and badges!

Transfer
Used USA Transfers for private transportation to the resort, well worth the extra couple of bucks for private van. USA was there to greet us at the airport and was on time picking us up for the return trip to the airport. Drivers were both very good.

Check-in
Check-in was quick and painless; a welcome glass of some fruit juice was served.
Laura from Concierge made a special effort to see us as I had exchanged mails with her prior to our arrival regarding room preferences. I thought this to be a very nice gesture; Laura was very helpful as was the staff at the front desk.

Room
I had requested and received rooms in building 5 or 6. These rooms were nice with king beds and very large rain shower type showers. The bed was comfortable.
The rooms were kept nicely by the housekeeping staff with some special touches.
Overall we found the rooms to be very nice.

Beach
The beach is very nice. It’s all soft sand with very little coral and few rocks.
There was some seaweed but not enough to complain about, besides there was and offshore storm that contributed to this so there was little the resort could do.
There are enough loungers and shaded areas to be found. If you get there by 8:00 or 9:00 you should be fine.

Staff
The entire staff is exceptional, enough said!

Food & Drink
Generally speaking the food was above average for an all-inclusive. The Italian restaurant was the best in our opinion. The Grill and buffets were both good as well.
Tapas was interesting but just ok. Drinks were made well, strong enough and top shelf was available in some choices. Service on the beach and around the pool was good.

General Comments-Vera Club
The key question is always whether or not you would return to a resort. The answer in this case is probably. As I mentioned above the food was good the beach an pools areas are good, and the staff is excellent. The only real drawback may be the difference in culture between American visitors and some of the Italian visitors. No major issue but the general lack of manners by our standard does get to be a bit much after 5 or 6 days. The lack of respect for personal space and waiting your turn in line is also hard for me to deal with. I do realize that these are primarily cultural differences but they will likely some impact on your experience. Let me be quite clear that I do not fault the resort for these issues but they are there. It’s really just a matter of your level of tolerance.

Room Tip: Try to get a room in building 5 or 6.

Overall an outstanding value for a 4 star all inclusive. We stayed May21-27 and had a wonderful time. The following is a breakdown of our stay.

Staff: Exceptionally friendly and professional. Everybody from bells, to cleaners, to servers did a wonderful job. (especially Amanda at the front desk)

Veraclub: We don't see what the complaints are about. They were very friendly and offered to include us in all the activities.(we even entered a bocce ball tournament but lost badly) I think the problem is language barrier as they only speak a little English. (I.E. aqua jeem means aqua gym, known by us as water aerobics) They even helped us find the name of a song, and took a few pictures of us.

Beach: Outstanding! Plenty of shade, people who say they can't find shade are crazy, we showed up past 11am most days and found several shady spots. Only complaints are the Italians wearing speedos... GROSS

Room: Average size but super clean and comfortable. We really enjoyed the towel animals. The AC worked extremely well and we would get cold if it was turned too low.

Food: Pretty good for breakfast and dinner, lunch could have been better. Overall defiantly better than average for all inclusive. We only wish they had better food for lunch. Also house wine was not that great, and bottled wine was very expensive (I.E $20 for bottle of Sutter home blush wine which is $3.49 @ Walmart )

Drinks: Nice selection of frozen and tropical concoctions. Cocktails were served with mid grade booze.

Grounds: Beautiful except for the front entrance. They have a long path that stretches from the lobby to the beach. Along that path is a jungle filled with iguanas who bath in the sun and curious coatimundis. It was fun to see all the nature. The days we didn't use mosquito spray we got bit a few times, so use bug repellant.

Spa: We both got a massage and facial. They were good, but not worth the high prices that we paid.

Room Tip: I suggest a junior suite in building 3 or 4 as they are exactly between lobby/restaurants and the be...

I'll keep it quick.

The beach is fantastic. White sand, beautiful water, and no rocks...Plenty of room to walk in either direction and lots of room to swim in the beautiful water...

As good as the beach was, the food was that bad. At an all-inclusive, I don't expect 5-star meals, but the food at Catalonia Royal was really bad. It was by far the worst I've had at an all-inclusive. We tried all five restaurants for dinner (including the buffet) and each was bad. Real bad.

We will not be returning. As great as the beach was, food is a big part of the trip for us and we could not return.

As for the Vera Club, we did not find it to be a big problem. Not sure if other reviewers just have sensitive feelings, but the actual Vera Club members are nice people and have no problem with Americans joining in activities. Most of the activities are silly and we didn't want to join, but we played volleyball on a couple days, which was a lot of fun.

The only downside to having so many Italians at the resort is that a good percentage of them smoke, and smoke often.

In sum, terrible food will keep us from ever coming back to the beautiful beach the resort has to offer....
