“Great place to beach, swim, eat and have beer!”
Reviewed 29 February 2012

Got back to the ship after an excursion and had several hours before we sailed so we put on our swim suits and headed for the cab stand. $2 per person for the short ride to town and the beach...great. Well the driver took us to an alley where we were promptly greeted by someone connected to one of the restaurants. Getting set up by the cab driver and getting hustled to eat at this one place wasn't too cool with me. Besides they didn't have any beach chairs on the water so we walked next door to El Capitan Monos. There was a very large group (later found out that they were part of the crew off our ship) at of the dining tables so service was a little slow at first.
But after a couple of beers and a huge plate of nachos, we felt we were in paradise!
Everyone next door had their tell-tail striped cruise ship towels, but not at El Captain Mono's (except ours).
I'd definitely go back.

“Good Food, Good Times”
Reviewed 9 September 2011

We were visiting my parents who live in the region. We had decided to go to Majahual on a Sunday. Every time we go to Mexico were there is a beach my wife and the rest of my family always wants to eat fresh fried fish. This was the exception; when we arrived we first cruised the town to see how it looked since the hurricane and all the damage. The mangrove are devastated but it seems that nature is trying to lick its wounds. Cruising down the main street is the wisest choice to do because you have all the restaurants that line the beach/Malecon (boardwalk pedestrian only) out by the street trying to attract business we stopped and asked about the price of fresh fried fish and kept going to the next guy and the next. This is when we found El Capitan Mono their prices seemed ok and when we asked about the price of fresh fried fish he had said 160 per kilo I mentioned that the other place down the road was at 140 and he knew the restaurant down the road and he said that he would give the kilo of fish at 150. The place seemed to look Ok from outside so we agreed. When we went inside the palapa was very nice outside and inside. The place seemed to be taken care of, there were only two other tables being used when we went in. We would have gone outside to their beach side tables but it was raining and we decided to wait it out inside. We originally were thinking fried fish but when the waiter who speaks both English and Spanish told us how they grill their fish, well we were hooked so we ordered the fish grilled with a special mayan style of marinaded. When the fish came out my goodness it seemed that it was a a whale of a fish but it was so tasty. It came out in a commercial size cooking sheet. The fish in the middle with a salad, rice, black beans and fried plantain and hot sauce with as meany tortillas that you wanted. Just let me tell you that us four adults weren't able to finish the fish and so we had fish for the rest of the week. We ended up paying around 900 pesos for all the food and drinks Afterwards they will offer a free shot of tequila from the little bar that they have. After finishing we went outside and went to their front beach seating and had a blast. We would definitely go again. I would recommend that if you order a whole fish to see it first and then ask how much it weighed, so as to not feel that you are being taking advantage of later on. Enjoy!!!
