Excellent trip to interesting ruins. The office was easy to find and a relatively short walk from the port. The locals were helpful at finding the office. The transportation was in a brand new 12 passenger van. Our guide David was great provided lots of information and was patient with the entire group. The trip was comfortable and educational. There was a fair amount of walking and standing required during the tour. I would highly recommend this company for touring the Chacchoben Ruins from Costa Maya. The cruise ship price was twice as much for a large bus/large group tour.

On our port stop from the Celebrity Equinox cruise ship we took the Mayan Ruins Tour at Chacchoben with the Native Choice tour company. This was a prearranged group tour [not through the cruise ship]. Our group received a discount since we had more than 40 participants. [$44pp] I noticed at the site a sign said tours were $40 pp. The ruins were almost an hour from the port area and we had transportation and narration between the port and the site. Therefore, even at full price it would seem a bargain.

The port area at Puerto Costa Maya is private. Only the tours booked via the cruise line are permitted to pick up in the port area. So, we had to walk to the tour office [or take a taxi] 4 blocks away. They said it would take us 10 minutes, but it took us a good 20+ minutes to get there from the ship. The dock is very long and they run a tram to take you to the port terminal. We missed it and had to walk on the way out. On the way back to the ship we caught it and it was great.

The Chacchoben ruins were very interesting. It was not as large a complex as we had seen in Altun Ha in Belize. We saw 4 pyramid temples and several smaller structures and ruins of noble homes. Like most of the Mayan sites the Chacchoben ruins were only recently rediscovered. Excavation began in 1994 and it has only been open to the public since 2002.

Our guide, Hugo, was excellent. I worried that we might have problems with the tour since The Native Choice had been hard to communicate with for our group booking.

However, all went well. Hugo was very knowledgeable regarding the site and the plants growing in the area. He was joined by another excellent guide at the ruins in order to provide a smaller group experience. Our bus had a large cooler of water that was much appreciated. I highly recommend this company.

We booked this trip for our day in Costa Maya and we were not disappointed. Joel was our guide and Miguel was our driver. You could tell that Joel was very proud and knowledgeable of his culture, making the trip more informative. The second half of the trip was my favorite, since we visited a local Mayan family and had lunch with them. Dinner onboard ship later that night, we recommended this trip to others and we will be recommending this trip to all we know and look forward to visiting again.

Did the Mayan Experience with Joel (our guide) and Miguel (our driver). Excellent tour! The ruins, and the story behind them, was good, but the highlight is the lunch with a Mayan family. Soooo good. Definitely do this if you get the chance!

If you're considering a tour of Mayan sites: Native Choice Tours is our go-to recommendation. I've started conversations with coworkers about our trip specifically to sing their praises, so I'm not going to let the fact I don't usually give reviews stop me here:

We had an excellent time on our tour of Dzibanche out of Costa Maya, Mexico. Our guides, Enrique and Melin, were outstandingly friendly, funny, attentive and knowledgeable - about both the historic and contemporary Mayan environments- an both in general and about the site specifically.

Not only are the guides knowledgeable, but the tour itself seemed very- personal- is the right word.

They planned for us to have a local treat that can only grow specifically in that region- brought in from one of the guide's own homes (but no spoilers). When someone in the group was discovered to be gluten intolerant, we stopped by a local tamale stand on the side of the road and had what I consider the best meal on a week long cruise. And at the top of an ancient temple, in the middle of a quiet countryside, far away from the noise and distraction of the ship or its commercial ports of call, maybe found a bit of peace as we looked out for miles across the countryside on a beautiful day, in a beautiful place full of history and culture.

Tours of ancient Mayan sites may be a crowded field, but if you let them- The Native Choice Tours will provide you with a once in a lifetime experience (or more, if you decide to go back.)

(Which we certainly hope to!)
