“Beautiful Resort But Needs Improvement In Many Areas...”
Reviewed 12 April 2012

Spend April 2nd until the 9th at the Coba. E-mailed ahead of time that we needed 2 rooms next to each other since we traveled with 2 teens. Requested room preferences, restaurant bookings etc. all ahead of time since we didn't want to spend a long time checking in... Well, got there and had 2 rooms assigned on different ends of the resort, ended up in a building we requested not to be in, on a floor we didn't want to be in, had no Restaurants reserved and spend OVER 2 hours in the Premier Lobby trying to check in...nightmare!!!...nothing available, "everybody requests certain buildings so they are all full", blah, blah...it was BOILING hot in the lobby, we were all near tears so in the end you take what they give you because you are so tired, hungry and pissed off by then, that you just want to leave and take ANY room. ~ Our room smelled, had puddles of water in the closet/floor from A/C leak, the telephone did not work, the TV did not work..etc, etc.. The kids room had no A/C and the toilet constantly clogged. Both rooms had a terrible musty smell that stays with you...The rooms are old and need redoing very much so...the lamp shades are burned up, the walls have stains of unknown origin and the rest of it is 2 stars, like a bad La Quinta/Comfort type Inn. It was a nightmare to get Restaurant reservations, you can only get one " nice " restaurant at a normal time and the rest at 10 pm or 5:30 pm...I even offered the woman 20$ and she said that she can't help us get a reservation at decent times...ended up at several restaurants we enjoyed in the end...Don Pablo was the best.
Felix the manager is wonderful and extremely hard working but there is only so much he can do...he can't make magic happen,he can't do everybody elses job, but I appreciate greatly all of his efforts!!! He was the only person at this resort that was exceptional!!!! He was on a trip when I made my requests and the other staff did not honor it. The staff at the bars and buffets were okay at best. Nobody ever went out of their way to try to do their best..."it is a job, I'll do as little as I can to get by"...with few exceptions. The last day in the buffet one waiter didn't even want to bring us drinks because we were leaving and "people on the last day don't tip"...when the bar at the activity pool was about to close they refused to let you look at the drink menu because it's ALMOST closing time ( 20 minutes later...) what difference if I look at the menu or not?!!! Just lame service for the most part. I would say " Gracias" and never receive the usual " de nada"... I have reason to complain, because I was just in Puerto Vallarta at a Riu Resort 2 weeks earlier with my daughter on Springbreak and the service there was COMPLETELY different. Everybody from the waitstaff, animation team, even the ladies cleaning the bathrooms were soooooo nice and joyful and kind. " Holas " wherever you went. Completey different mentality than here.
The buffets at the Principe had the same thing everyday, lunch and dinner almost the same, you could always find something but nothing special...even the cheese sauce for nachos and the guacemole was thinned down...I got ill one day but recovered quickly ( thanks Immodium...lol..).
Now to the positive: The grounds, beach, pools, everything is VERY, VERY beautiful!!!! It is a gorgeous place!! Fantastic snorkeling, beautiful beaches, beautiful nature everywhere. The fellow vacationers were mostly Canadian, Spanish, American and European. Very nice mix of upper-middle class clientelle...no drunks or rude people ( only the staff sometimes ).
We stayed in Akumal many times and I preferred the Palladium resort next door. Much better rooms, food and service for the same price. We spend more money on this trip than any previous times and I prefered the Palladium, Grand Sunset Princess and Riu in the Riviera Maya much more. Service and roomquality IS part of your vacation and for a 5 star hotel these things cannot be compromised...This place could be perfect with a complete remodeling job and coplete staff change except for Felix as the new CEO...

This resort delivered in everything, where to start; we were there March 17th for a week, the staff was terrific, service was excellent and always looking to please you in every aspect. The
ride from airport was about 1hour and 20min, our bus was for all Gran Bahia
Principe properties, majority got off at Coba.

Food quality, excellent, buffets are buffets but this had selection and variety, main buffet was although somewhat the same every day, there was lots and lots to choose from so you could try something different daily. It suited every appetite, it had everything. Resort was at capacity and never felt crowed, drinks line 2-3 people sometimes none. Buffet no lines except for pasta and ommettes as expected.

The entertainment staff was excellent, put in countless hours and entertaining nonstop. From pool side, to outside terrace at night to the theater - these guys delivered. The shows were well done and worth seeing. If you miss a show one night at Coba, its playing at another resort, just check the other property boards when your there. The trams were very good, never had to waited long.

Beaches were very good, nice sand and waters. Beach bars very great, snorkeling off the beach was good. By nine most good spots gone, the Coba beach least spots compared to the
other two, so I would say reserve by 8am.

The many pools were great, we normally hang out at the activity pool, lots of entertainment and games. Pool entertainment staff normally starts at 10am, but the real action closer to twelve. Quite pool too quite, if that's what your looking for but nice. Yes, reserving sunbeds early is a must, similiar to most places. Rooms were very good and clean, great size and comfortable, only bad thing was no exhaust fan so if your the last one taking a shower is like a steam bath. Bring an outlet adapter to allow multi use of plugs for chargers etc. Didn't get the room requested, we were in 21 which was better, about a minute walk to activity pool, front lobby for tram access for other properties, across threatre. People stated some highway noice, didn't hear asound.

Outside of lobby terrace, makes for a great party every night with DJ dancing and entertainement. Felt like New Years eve a few nights with the balloons, music and DJ engery. Resort cleanliness, impressive the effort they go, beauty, ambience, surroundings and ample choice of bars, lounges were great.

We did three ala-cartes, Dan Pabalo, French Gourmet and Japanese (table), all deliverable, service and quality of food was excellent. We were asked to fill out comment cards, which was nice to see twice, hard to find anything negative. One night went to Playa Del Carmen, went outside towards highway looking to get Collectivio, but it was dark and travelling with kids, taxi driver approached us and advise he will take us one block before 5th Avenue and walk us down to strip and wait for us, for $25 each way, paid him when he dropped us off at our lobby at Coba, geat guy. Ride was about half hour, worth the trip.

This resort had everything anyone could want and more, first class, great people, great service, superior property, you won't be disappointed. I understand why people keep coming back and so are we.

My husband and I along with my brother and his wife spent an amazing week at the Gran Bahia Principe Coba from March 22nd to the 29th.

We had emailed Felix Schlokat prior to our arrival to request our à la cartes and room requests. He came through with flying colors. Thank you so much Felix! We were all in the same building and all on the same floor, building 29A 3rd floor. The rooms were great and the maid service was exceptional.

This was our 3rd trip to Coba and our 6th time at a Bahia property, but for my brother and his wife this was their first trip to Mexico and first time at a Bahia. Needless to say, that this will not be their last visit to this wonderful resort. We really enjoyed all the amenities at Coba and have no complaints.
Kudos to ALL the staff for doing such a great job!! Special mentions for going above and beyond the call of duty- Felix Schlokat, Manuel and Rene at the Hybiscus pool bar ( Thank you for getting me a plate of Jicama for my birthday…Yummy!), Roberto at the Gran Tortuga, Jose at the Tequila and to all the bellmen and gentlemen at the reception/lobby desk.

We have recommended the Gran Bahia Principe Coba to all our families and friends. We had a marvelous time and miss it so much already. We can't wait to visit again!!!

This was the second visit for my husband and I. We traveled with 5 other people and had a wonderful time. We booked the trip through Apple and would do it again in a heartbeat. There were some small extras that we received that were not there when we booked through expedia. Iain was our Apple Rep and was very helpful with our questions. We checked in at the Akumal Premier lobby and Felix greeted us right away. Both Felix and Iain both seemed to really care about the quality of our vacation. We asked for rooms close together and all but one were in the same villa and on the same floor. We were in Villa 23, close to the quiet pool and it was a great location. We had no issues with our room, air conditioning worked, toilet worked, fridge worked. The food was good, lots to choose from! We ate at the Japanese, Brazilian, and Italian restaurants and all were wonderful with good service. We also attended a gala dinner and the food and service there were WONDERFUL! Felix made sure we were well taken care of! The chairs are hard to come by on the beach and by the pools. You need to get up super early to reserve them or wait until about 3:30 and they seem to clear out. We did venture out to Playa Del Carmen and were very glad that we did. It was close enough that the taxi ride wasn't super long but it was also nice to get out of the resort and see some of Mexico. All in all it is a nice resort with tons to do, lots of food, and staff that really tries to please.

My girlfriend and spend a week at the Coba from April 1-8th and from the start it was a great time. Sergio checked us in and made sure we were comfortable with the resort and where things were. I found the resort a little large but that added to the selection. The pools were great HOWEVER, being out at 7am to try and find chairs in the shade was not my idea of fun. I wish that the resort had a firm enforced rule to alleviate this issue especially when you would have one person laying down towels over 5 or 6 chairs.

The food was fantastic. We ate most of our breakfasts at the Coba (Thank you Carlos for always being accommodating). I found that Tulum had the best lunch buffet (did not get to try their breakfast sadly) and Akumal had the best dinner buffet. The a la carte's were great but it somewhat confuses me that when going in for the reservation, they would state that they were at capacity but half the restaurant would be empty. We ate at three a la cartes: Italian and Mediterranean at Coba as well as Brazilian at Tulum.

Ocean and beach were best just outside of Akumal but again, must get there early to get chairs.

Rooms were clean and the showers were great ( jacuzzi tubs were stellar). The TV's weren't great but obviously you're not meant to be in your room watching TV but there were a couple games on that I had to watch.. Loved having a movie on for my afternoon siesta.

Overall, I WILL return to the GBP but will probably stay at Akumal or Tulum on the next go round.

Once again, thank you Sergio, Carlos, Mayday, Omar and the rest of the staff that made our first vacation together memorable.

Room Tip: I stayed in 1601 and enjoyed being on the first floor close to the pool. Didn't have much nose d...
