Del Sol is on Half Moon Bay. The bay is protected by a reef that is "kind of" the other half of the moon. This means it is a very safe place to swim and snorkel. At low tide it is nearly impossible to find a place you cannot stand up. This also makes it much easier to see the fish and the coral since you need not dive to get close to them. There are often rays on the south side. The beach is not all that broad, but I have never seen it crowded. Some of the best eats in Akumal are well within walking distance and you can still completely avoid the crowds cramming "down town". If you want to see Yal-ku Lagoon, it is a bit of a hike but very easy to get to. La Buena Vida beach restaurant is a 30 second walk. One of the best places to while away the hours. We often would snorkel, then have something to eat, then snorkel again. If you want a "better dining experience" (where "better may mean "romantic" or perhaps "finer dining", which is not a diss on La Buena Vida's food) La Lunita is also in walking distance as well as Hotel Que Onda.

I should not forget to tell you about the rooms! They all have a separate dining/sitting room and a bedroom. The bedroom has a small balcony off of it. If it is a rainy day (that does happen) Del Sol is one of the better places to "weather" it. There is also a convenience store in the building which is really important if you want to avoid the crowds that are everywhere else.

Akumal has changed dramatically over the last 20 years. It was on a gravel road from Cancun the first time I was there, now it is 4-lane "freeway" (Mexican freeways have some very different rules than those in the US, like speed bumps to slow traffic down so pay attention.) It is surrounded by "all-inclusive" resorts that have security guards patrolling the beach ensuring you have your wristband. Del Sol, in contrast, still exhibits that same "happiness" that it gave me the first time I was there.

A problem for everyone on the Yucatan, there is an over abundance of sea plants that come in nearly year around (I think I've been there every part of the year). These can interfere with your day, but if they do it is usually just a minor problem.

View was great, we were absolutely beach front. Very good restaurants nearby. Lots of bottled water provided by hotel. Parking at the hotel was nice and easy.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-The worst part was the unexpected huge amount of SEAWEED on the beaches and in the ocean around the hotel area. The smell of it rotting was awful and they had workers trying to move it in wheel barrow loads off to the side, in between the hotel and the restaurant, where it would sit in gigantic piles and rot. The workers never caught up with the huge amount of new seaweed coming in every day from the ocean. I now know this problem isn't present all year long, but it was extremely disappointing and affected the view, the smell of the breeze, snorkeling, walking on the beach, going to the pool. I wish we had known in advance that this sometimes happens around this time of year.
-The only street leading to the hotel from the highway 307 was crazy. It was jam packed with guides and hawkers trying to sell you tourist activities/trips, stopping traffic in the middle of the road to talk to people in cars. Then you have to navigate through a lot of huge potholes in the same road, bad deep potholes. Then you have to watch out for different kinds of speedbumps randomly placed, no real indicators or signs and some are harder than others to see. Parking is always an issue except at your hotel.
-Rooms were small. Beds were hard and uncomfortable

Room Tip: Verify if they are still having a major seaweed problem before booking!

We stayed in a 2bdr first floor walk out to the beach room. Akumal is one of my favorite places. The location of the hotel is great. The first floor units can't be beat as you just walk out to Half Moon Bay's beautiful beach. The unit was ample. We had a late check in and the key was left with the night security.

We did find the units needed maintenance as we encountered a couple of issues: moldy pack and play for our toddler, water seeping from the floor in the kitchen.

Room Tip: first floor with walkout to the beach.
