We stayed at Chalet Gabbro at the end of the ski season. The chalet is
excellent in all ways.
We flew into Grenoble and it is a straightforward drive which takes just
over an hour. There is no problem in accessing the chalet, you can park
right outside the door to unload your luggage. It's easy to leave one
vehicle right outside the door. If you have more than one car with your
group there is a parking area a few yards away from the chalet. We didn't us it but he chalet also has a garage!
First impressions were that it exceeded our expectations. This continued
throughout our weeks stay. When you enter there is a drying room which has
ski boot warmers. It's great to put on warm ski boots at the start of each
day. The stairs lead down to the middle floor which have the bedrooms. The
bonus is that they are all en-suite. The stairs then lead down to the bottom
level where there is a further bedroom which is off the bottom of the stairs
but well away from the lounge area so is quiet. The bottom level also has
the lounge, kitchen dining area and a laundry room with a large drinks
fridge, washing machine and drier. The lounge gives access to the decking
and to the hot tub. The views from the lounge are totally stunning. The
colour of the mountains change with the light.
We have stayed at other chalets and none of them have the overall same level
of equipment as this chalet. Simple things like having a washing machine and
drier makes life so much easier and it means you don't have to bring so many
The beds are very comfortable and the bedding is clean and crisp. There is
plenty of storage space to store your clothes and ski gear. The showers are
proper showers with copious amounts of hot water which is great after a days
The kitchen has all what you would need to cook for a large group. Those
that cook are not left on their own as there are bar stools surrounding the
kitchen so other can sit around and chat.
It's great to have Internet access, the speeds are good even with a number
of people using it at the same time. If you have the time, we didn't, there
is satellite TV and a DVD with a large flat screen TV.
The bonus is the hot tub. After a days skiing its great to relax. Sipping
champagne (or even a beer) in a hot tub looking over the mountains is so
The chalet is in a great position. It's lovely and quiet yet you still have
access to the services you might need. Access to the ski lifts is a few
minutes walk away. The lifts take you straight over to the larger resort of
Alpe d'Huez and access to the Grande Domaine. The village has a couple of
nice little restaurants and a small but adequate supermarket. The bigger
supermarket is a short drive away. It's a must to have a hire car. It's so
easy to drive into the other resorts if you wanted a wider variety of
restaurants. The summer road is an experience not to miss with spectacular
views. There is a ESF ski school in the village. We had lessons with ettaine
and would recommend that you ask for him. The ski hire shop is next door and
has a great selection of good quality equipment.
We had a great time in a fantastic chalet and would recommend it without
hesitation you will not be disappointed.
