My wife and I and our dog Happy stayed here for three wonderful nights. The room was clean and spacious and well appointed. And the staff were very helpful. The complimentary hot breakfast included scrambled eggs, bacon and toast. All for under $100 a night was a real bargain compared to other hotels in the area. I would definitely recommend the Southport Comfort Suites.

I've stayed in Southport before, but never at this hotel, so I decided to give it a try. Overall we were generally pleased. And it is a decent value, too. As I'll explain later, there were a few areas where they missed the mark, but there is a lot to like as well.

Check-in was quick and courteous. Karen was not only very pleasant, but also very helpful in accomodating my wife's request for pillows.

The room was clean and generally in good condition. We opted for the "deluxe" suite and enjoyed the 2-person in-room whirlpool. The hotel is not new, but seems to be maintained. The decor in the room was better than the typical Comfort property. The 8-inch wallpaper ceiling borders really added a nice touch and I was struck at the attention to detail and precision of the workmanship for an older property. Like all Comfort Suites, the property is 100% non-smoking. That's a huge plus for me, but for smokers the Wingate and Hampton Inn make fine alternatives.

I really appreciated the charging station in the room that had not only standard AC outlets (3 of them), but also two USB charging ports. What a great amenity! I'm hoping that other hotels will take note.

We visited during the off-season and the hotel was only at about 50% capacity, but it felt like we had the place to ourselves - very, very quiet. Perhaps summer weekends are another story.

The granite bathroom sink/vanity area was big with plenty of space for essentials. Lighting in the bathroom was nice and bright. The bathroom included a full tub. There was a second "kitchen style" sink in the main part of the suite across from the refrigerator and microwave in our room. Water temperature was fine. Water pressure in the shower was very good, though the head does not have an adjustable spray pattern.

Unfortunately, the room had no closet or anyplace to hang clothes "out of sight". In fact there is not much space to hang any clothes at all. This was disappointing. In addition, drawer space was minimal - had we been there more than just overnight that might have been an issue. One would think that there would at least be a fold-out luggage stand to make up for these deficiencies, but that was sadly not the case. Management should seriously consider adding them since that is an "easy fix". In the end you'll have to just use up valuable dresser space for luggage.

The bed was a little firm for my tastes- some people will like that, others not. Our room was stocked with those little square mini-pillows which was a real bummer. My wife asked for a couple of extra pillows and was given two full-size pillows by Karen. The linens and comforter were in great shape.

Internet service (in our room at least) was like a whack-a-mole game - it kept popping in and out. Sometimes we had 4 bars, sometimes we had 1 bar (in the exact same spot) and the connection dropped completely more than a few times. When it was working, it got the job done, but was pretty pokey. It is probably fine for checking email and the like, but don't plan on getting any serious work done on it. This is certainly an area they can improve on.

Excluding the eggs, the breakfast was very good. The attendance kept everything well stocked and was friendly and helpful. The dining area is woefully undersized and they ask that you don't eat anywhere but the dining area (especially not in your room), so this can be a problem. Just pretend you're actually at Outback waiting on a table to open.

If you've never stayed in a Comfort Suites property before, just be aware that "suite" means a big room with a separate sitting area with a 4-foot high "wall" that basically serves to define the sitting area rather than to divide the room. That's was not a problem for us in the least, but is something to keep in mind if your needs are for an actual suite hotel.

The location of this hotel is actually west of the main part of town, but only by a couple of miles. If you're headed to Oak Island, this is actually a plus since it is very near the road which heads that way. Ferrys to Bald Head Island and Fort Fisher are about a 10-minute drive East. There are a few fast-food places by the hotel (KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, McDonald's and Quiznos) and a few more a couple of miles east. Bella Cucina, about 3/4 miles east (next door to Hampton Inn) is a decent Italian eatery if fast food is not in your plans. There is also a seafood and steak place close by, but I've never eaten there.

Overall, it was a pretty good stay. If they could put luggage stands in the rooms, include a few full-size pillows and shore up their internet infrastructure, it would earn a 5-dot rating from me.

The staff is wonderful.
The hallway smells of vomit. The room is shoddy and scary. Do not stay here. There are other better, less worn out hotels in town

We stayed there for Mother's Day weekend and were very impressed with the cleanliness and staff attitude. Our reservation was last minute but they fit us into one of their upgraded rooms at no additional charge. The free Continental Breakfast was well stocked and clean and all of the food was great, considering it was all pre-packaged foods.

Even Hurricane Irene didn't spoil our vacation to Oak Island, NC because we stopped at the Comfort Suites in Southport, NC on August 28, 2011 to sit her out. The staff was excellent, so friendly and anxious to help us, we actually had a very nice stay. The town had shut down due to the weather and the island was evacuated of nonresidents, so we stayed here. The room was very clean, very comfortable and the round the clock coffee in the dining area kept us going through the storm. The breakfast was comparable to the best restaurant's in town and included in the stay. I definitely would stay here again.

Room Tip: The king size beds were very comfortable and the windows provided an excellent view.
