Owner description: The Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center is a NCDOT facility that provides a friendly face and tourism information to the traveling public. Whether by water or by land, the staff at this lovely complex aims to please, and assist the traveling public with a variety of services. About the Dismal Swamp Forbidding as its name may be, the Great Dismal Swamp is one of the few natural American gems remaining in the East. Despite its impressive size it remains a mystery to most people. We invite you to come see why many notables in America's history were lured by Nature's backdrop of emerald draping vines and sweet warbles of the songbirds which call the swamp "home". Today we are able to explore it's secrets, without the hardships endured by the early Americans pioneers that sought to tame it. Home to one of the largest Black Bear populations on the East Coast, subtropical birds, butterflies, bobcats and white-tailed deer, it is easily understood why this land deserves our protection. It offers travelers wealth of history and lore, flora and fauna.

It seems like they focus on the NC section of the swamp. The center is fun and informative. There is a nice boardwalk trail through the swamp is a must to do. There are other trails to do as well. As we went back to our car the bridge was open to allow a boat to go through. That was pretty cool to see how it closed.

The staff provides hospitable welcome to the Great Dismal Swamp. Their gentle enthusiasm is contagious. “We are the only welcome center in the USA that serves both automobile and boating visitors!” Sweet little gift shop, pamphlets describing Great Dismal Swamp opportunities, and free stickers!

We brought our bikes to ride the trails at the Dismal Swamp. The visitor center has quite an animal exhibit of wildlife that can be found in the park. The displays to need to have additional labels, I'm not sure what all the animals are...The gate keeper was very friendly and there is a sign in procedure, so that staff can assure everyone is out of the park at closing time. There is a nice accessible boardwalk that allows everyone to have a glimpse inside swamp life. We rode about 5 total miles of trails and found the trails to be easy to ride. While a family mentioned they had saw a baby black bear climbling a tree, we did not see any wildlife, except for an abundance of butterflies. It was a nice morning, and will return it again, We would also like to investigate the paved trail that runs along the main highway right along the canal.

Thank you so much for visiting and exploring the Dismal Swamp. We're glad to hear you had a enjoyable experience and plan on visiting again. The three mile paved Dismal Swamp Canal Trail in North Carolina runs parallel to US Hwy 17 and the Historic Dismal Swamp Canal. The trail also offers a 1.5 mile extension into the village of South Mills. We look forward to seeing you again!

The women at the welcome center was hospitable and knowledgable. Beside all the maps and paperwork, it is a beautiful place. If you go into the swamp you can spend hours hiking or riding your bike on the bike trail. Love this place.
