“Great eco-friendly B&B in Penola”
Reviewed 22 October 2010

The room was great with everything you could need. The B&B is eco-friendly with rain water tanks, solar heating etc. Very helpful host. Breakfast was very basic, yoghurt, juice and some bread to make toast with. Bit expensive though.

Must@Coonawarra is a newish 5-star resort in Penola, in the heart of the wine country of south-eastern South Australia. The value - $A195 for a one-bedroom suite, including provisions for a continental breakfast each morning - is amazing. The flat screen HD TV with dvd/cd player in the living area is complemented by another in the bedroom, so nobody needs to miss anything. Oh, and there are free dvds to borrow from the office, as well. A smaller room, with no separate living room or spa (ours was great), is only $A175.

And the environs are terrific. There are the world class wineries nearby, plus excellent meals at Pipers of Penola and Upstairs at Hollicks, the diningroom at one of the wineries.

The only (slight) downside: rather threatening signs about late checkout, breakages and the like. But don't let them spoil your fun. Highly recommended.

I loved the neat, minimalistic layout of the rooms. You step in the main glass sliding door, which overlooks the outdoor decking and manicured native gardens, past the bed then the 2 seater sofa and on the back wall is the kitchen. Behind all this is the ensuite bathroom. The room was light and bright and not cluttered with excess decorations. The small sofa and dining table were of good quality and the flatscreen TV positioned well so it could be viewed from the sofa and the bed. The ensuite was large, exceptionally clean and the shower was beatifully hot.
Breakfast was provided by way of small cereal boxes, bread for toasting, jams, small diced fruit container and fresh milk. All perfectly adequate and as I'm not a big breakfast eater more than enough. There are heaps of nearby eateries if this doesn't fill you up.
Management were pleasant and helpful and I certainly wasn't put off by the before mentioned rules - at least you know that noise etc will not be tolerated.
I would definately stay here again.

This place is well located (you can walk into the centre of Penola, to visit the restaurants and pub), clean and comfortable. My only negative comment is the same as previous reviewers - bossy instructions in inch-high capitals in the welcome pack set a really bad tone and are completely unnecessary.

we checked in, it was all very pleasant.. then we got to our room.

the first thing you see when you walk into the room is the standard book explaining the amenities & the local area. except that this one has on the cover (in 4cm high capitals!) some of the ways you can be fined!! what a welcome.

ABSOLUTELY no noise after 11pm
checkout by 10am or face a $20 fine
"accidents can happen, but must be paid for"
"do NOT touch the power button...."
etc
etc

Other than all the rules you have to follow, it's a nice place.
Walls are a bit thin
& the shower had no hot water on the first day
breakfast is basic, but ok (bottle of juice, 2 slices of bread each & a small box of cereal)

All in all, if you're staying in Penola to break up the drive between Adelaide & Melbourne, it does the job - but I wouldn't want to stay longer than a couple of nights.
