I'd looked at this location in October the year before considering it for my birthday at the suggestion of a friend who is an amazing artist and interior designer, but we had to change plans, and we rented it for our 15th anniversary weekend over Memorial Day weekend. We planned our wedding on that weekend so we would always have the extra time to celebrate each year.
This place was so perfect for what we need. It's at the back and completely quiet with no traffic noise, a pretty and simple garden and trees, birds, and from the back deck a wonderful view of the sunset through the trees. The owner is Frank Lloyd Wright's great-granddaughter, which she shares on her VRBO website for this rental, because you can see it in the way she decorated. The kitchen was fully furnished if you choose to use it, although we barely did because of the great restaurants in Highlands. You enter the location from Hwy 64 and pass a beautiful lake I believe is maintained by an HOA for the neighborhood. If you love morning and evening walks, this location is perfect, because from the cabin at the back of the neighborhood to the main road you enjoy shade, beautiful landscaping, and a lake. There is a country club of across the road, and about one mile away is the best overlook view of rolling NC mountains you can find in the area. Just turn left towards Cashiers at the main road instead of turning right to Highlands.
We didn't have access to the upstairs which holds the third bedroom because of a sign marking the area private, but I know she had a reason to do that, and I had been clear when renting it that we wouldn't need the third bedroom or be using it. I love the detail she put into making sure the place is relaxing, from the book of menus to information about local sites and things to do, and the labeled light switches so that you aren't spending 10 minutes trying to figure out how to turn on what light instead of unpacking and relaxing. There were open drawers available in the bathroom and bedroom we used (master suite which has its own private balcony overlooking her small garden area and the stone steps that go down the side of the cabin down the hill) which allowed us to enjoy the rooms more without countertop clutter and we felt at home. The water pressure was great, and the interior is beautifully casual, woodsy, and reflective of touches of her great-grandpa's style. There were movie posters of her mother Anne Baxter's films which I loved to see, having grown up with vintage movies from that time. We also appreciated her thoughtfulness in leaving us a bottle of red cab which she asked me about before we arrived, and by the way, she's not one of those people who doesn't respond when you're making arrangements and trying to make a reservation. She responds quickly, and is professional.
This isn't your average vacation cabin rental, and it's full of good energy. I think my favorite was the availability of screened sliding doors, fresh air, and the cool temps we enjoyed along with the comfort and attractive quality. We would go there again. I've already told my chiropractor who's friend loves Frank Lloyd Wright architecture and influences, and two other people who don't want to have to waste time looking through cabin rentals to find one that is nice like this one.
