“Such a nice surprise”

Harper House/ Hickory History Center
Reviewed 6 April 2018

We went to see this house with little expectation and were so blown away by the house. Cameron our tour guide was amazing and patient with my two daughters who asked a billion questions. The house is beautiful and so well restored. I highly recommend a stop here. Plus Hickory is such a cute town.

This house is a must see for anyone into period architecture. I have toured many Georgian, Federal, Gothic and Greek Revival structures as well as Frank Lloyd Wright creations and this Victorian is definitely at the top of my list of go-to's. The restoration was apparently well funded and the wall papered walls and ceilings are beautifully done.
If you have an hour and $5.00 it will be time and money well spent.

The Harper House is considered by the NC Dept of Archives and History to possess the finest Queen Anne Interior Styling in the entire state, and that's well-deserved. The home has been 100% restored, furnished and decorated with impeccable taste and style, to represent its 1887 period. It is a pleasure to behold, and is lovingly described by the guides. Don't miss the attic surprise!
A very modest fee of $5.00 plus tax for this home, plus the Lyerly House, a gorgeous relocated craftsman home which houses the visitor center and a special exhibit on the Hickory polio treatment center from 1945, which was unexpectedly interesting. Well done!

The Harper house is a beautiful walk through time. So much history here in Hickory! Kendall gave us the tour, she is so knowledgeable and involved with our questions. The amount of detail and workmanship is just breathtaking. Upon leaving, we had to pause a second, adjusting to 2017 again! I highly recommend !!
