Disappointed after going to a gem mine and campground closed, the Cherroke Gem Mine closed at 2:00p for new guest; we made it to Sheffield Mine which is for sale if you are interested. $600k for a turn key operation with a house. We had a great time here. 3 buckets for $20 is minimum I believe. It is a few hours of working the grates. It was fun to find rubies from a bucket of dirt. If you have a black light flashlight, make sure you bring it. If the stone turns red you found it. Enjoy the adventure. We met a couple that go back regularly so they must have gotten some good ones and cashed in.

This is one of only three mines in Franklin that uses "unsalted" dirt. This means that what you find is 100% from the local ground. However, you will find very little rubies and even less that are cutable. The help had us sifting through every spec of dirt looking for the tiniest fleck of ruby. We found very little. Some folks were finding 15ct - 40ct pieces but they were of poor quality.
There is a better mine in the area that you will be much happier with.

My husband and I went mining for the first time for are 3rd year wedding anniversary. The people working there are friendly, helpful, also Explained and showed us what to look for befor we got started. The prices wasn't bad.My husband found 19cts all together and I found 20ct. The biggest we found was a 8ct ruby and a 5ct sapphire. We thought was good for are first time mining. Other ppl there found much bigger ones.Had a great time and we plan on going back.

This mine has been very productive for me for 17 years. I have found many stones over 30 carats and two over 100 carats. Some have cut into beautiful cabs and I have sold some of them mounted in jewelry.
These are lavender to purple and some pink rubies and sapphires. Most are small chips which can be used in small necklace bottle or collected and placed in glass spice jars for display.
Do not rush the cleaning process when you go to this mine.
This is not a true "mine" as the buckets are filled from the hillside behind the shop. Tiffany and American Gem prospected this many years ago and moved a lot of dirt when they opened the original mine and that is what constitutes the dirt in the buckets. They did not find a source for the stones and abandoned the area.

We brought our kids here as our friends recommended it to is. Took us forever to find it and when we finally did, they did not accept credit cards so we had to turn around and get cash. Only reason we returned is bc our kids really wanted to go. They did enjoy there time. The rainbow bucket is definitely the more "fun" bucket. It has all sorts of pretty stones ( large and small) Lots of varieties. The nature bucket had slivers of rubies but my older child preferred the rainbow bucket and she is 14... never too old to get the "kid" bucket.
Overall it was a fun experience for the kids, however next time I will probably give another place a try.
