“You pay for the view”

We have used Emerald Isle Realty in the past and have found there properties extremely nice. Upon arrival to this property, we found we had made a mistake in renting the property that the realty company had marked "Gold". The kitchen had the bare essentials and all were dirty. There were two decent sized saucepans, but one was stainless and the Teflon was worn off the other one. We scrubbed all the utensils, bowls and plates as they were dirty when we arrived.

While you can't get much closer to the ocean and the view was beautiful, the house was not up to our standard. The first floor was uninhabitable. We plugged in the dehumidifier and emptied it a dozen times. Luckily, there was room on the main level for us and the three boys to stay. There was a reason that the basement with the two sets of bunks was a carport and should have been left as that. To state that this is a five bedroom home is not fair when two of the rooms really can't be used due to the musty smell. Obviously the problem is known since there is a dehumidifier present. The second full bath is also in the basement as well as the laundry room. We used the laundry appliances, but not the shower on the first floor. The musty smell was just too much.

We were unable to locate a broom and dustpan to keep the house tidy; however, being that the house had all hard flooring we couldn't figure this out. We travelled with our three children and had to instruct them to be careful on the pool deck as well. While the on line photos of the pool deck showed a new deck that was not the case when we arrived. I understand that due to the environment the decking does fade and wear, the heads of the nails protruded upwards catching the bottoms of our feet. The gate on the pool entrance had a broken latch and was difficult to keep closed and the gate to the boardwalk on the opposite end had a broken latch too. They had installed a string in the top of the latch to allow it to open.

For future renters, I would be aware of these major property issues as the rent is way too high for a property in this condition.

We were very disappointed with this vacation rental. We have vacationed at Emerald Isle for the past three years and previously, were quite pleased with the properties we rented from Emerald Isle Realty. Unfortunately, the issues we experienced were not such that were going to be remedied by a quick call to housekeeping or maintenance.

I relied upon their rating system and guest reviews to gauge the quality of the property. When I saw that Paws In The Sand was rated "Gold" and guest reviews appeared to be favorable, I felt confident based on our experience with two other properties in which we had stayed - Emerald Star (Gold) and Crosspointe (Silver). (Both of these are great!) Sadly, when we arrived, I felt that we had made an expensive mistake.

Our first impression of the main floor was okay, but when we entered the lower level, the dank, musty smell was so overpowering and off-putting that I knew we would be unable to use that part of the house. To be clear, it was evident that it had been recently cleaned, but between the number of insects (no doubt gaining access through the cracks in the doors or holes in the vinyl flooring) and the smell, it was not livable. In addition, we noticed that the doorknob on the pool side of the ground level was about to fall off.

Retreating to the main floor, I started to unpack and found a box of flypaper. I was correct in assuming this was not a good omen. You guessed it -- a flying insect problem. In addition, the deadbolt on the west side was almost impossible to turn and we decided not to use it for the length of our stay for fear of being locked out of the house.

Moving outdoors, we noticed that a baluster in the upper deck rail was not attached at top (moving in the wind) and felt fortunate that we were not traveling with small children who might be in danger. Exiting out of the pool area using the broken magnetic latch which had to be slid up and down in order gain access, we walked toward the beach on the boardwalk. Someone rested lightly against the railing of the boardwalk and was alarmed to feel it sway out as if it was about to give way. Note that this someone is very small. We alerted all to be very cautious of the railings.

While we were able to enjoy the ocean and beach, we were unable to use the outdoor shower -- it doesn't work. We also tried the spigot near the shower to no avail. We made do the best we could using the hose on the ocean side of the pool. The umbrella on the table next to the pool would have been nice, except for the fact that it is broken and sporting a rusty metal spine that flew around our faces in the wind as we sat at the table.

On Thursday, June 5, a thunderstorm rolled in and we found ourselves without power for a time. With dusk approaching, we decided to look for some emergency candles -- what beach house would be without these? This one is. While we were searching for candles, we discovered a good sized leak in the ceiling of the northwest bedroom that had soaked the bed and other personal items. We also ventured into the dungeon, er -- lower level -- in search of candles and found a large puddle of water on the floor of the living area that had come in under the door.

In all honesty, this year, I feel like we were misled by the rating of this subpar property and as a result, overcharged for what we received.
