“Long afternoon walk to Sugarloaf”

Carolina Beach State Park

Took the trail from the Ranger Station. Crisp, sunny Fall day w/ our dog on the leash. Approx. 3+ mile round trip (seems longer!!) but very flat and well marked path. Once we reached the big sand dune (Sugarloaf) , spent lazy moments taking in the river and the solitude.

Average park. Beach access, picnic areas. If I remember right you have to pay to go there. Plenty of parking.

We have visited Carolina Beach many times on the town & ocean side but it was cooler so we wanted to hike a bit so we went over to the state park . The state park is not on the ocean side of the island , it's on the Cape Fear river side. It's just a few minutes by car. We enjoyed walking the trails and there is beautiful views of the Cape Fear to be seen. The trail is cool and unique looking with the different kind of pines and plants . Not hard trails . Stop and get a map at the visitor center. Our son enjoyed fishing there as well .

Really carolina beach is just ok . I’m spoiled having grown up on Long Island . My biggest problem was access and signage . What the place needs is more public parking . More beach area , although I do appreciate a short walk to the water .
Someone would do well to invest in a real destination resort

We visited with our dog while staying nearby. We were here twice and really enjoyed hiking in the park. It made a nice diversion was being at the beach. The park opens at 8:00 and there is plenty of parking and no admission fee. The area around the marina and along the river is beautiful! We walked the Venus Fly Trap Trail and spotted a few, although they were dormant this time of year (late fall.) They are very small and had to see so you really have to look for them. We saw a nice buck in the swampy area which was an added treat. The only negative for us was when we were walking along the road looking for the trails our dog got several little very sharp burrs in her paws. We did not notice until she started limping and we had to pull them out. Next time we know to stay on the roads or trails. Otherwise, it was a very enjoyable experience.
