I will begin my review by saying that Stick Boys is our favorite dining in Boone. There's a wide array of choices to please just about anyone's taste, with their vast menu on a huge chalkboard which covers the entire back wall.
Stick Boys is located in a strip mall, and often looks closed, even though they're open. Yes, there's a lighted 'Open' sign, but it still looks closed from the outside! My husband actually watched an older couple approach the door (which looks like a door to somewhere else), then walk away, thinking the restaurant was closed. Hubby ran outside to tell them that the facility was indeed open (yes, he's such a good samaritan)!
Their salads, sandwiches, and baked goods are out-of-this-world, many of which are quite creative and healthy. Having been in town two years ago and frequenting this place, Stick Boys was the very first place we stopped during our very recent trip to Boone. We sought it out, remembering its exact location, since we visited so many times in 2015.
I opted for their delicious Mount Arti, ($9.99) which consists of greens, topped with artichokes, roasted red peppers, feta cheese, and eggs, the eggs being prepared 'your way.' It was a difficult decision for me, since the last time we were here, we must have ordered their french toast 3-4 times.
That said, when my husband's french toast ($7.89) was placed before him this time, we were aghast! I will explain. As I mentioned, two years ago we pretty much ordered their brioche french toast every day. Literally! Cut thick, the bread was billowy (is that a word?), covered the entire plate, soft and heaven-like. To our surprise and dismay, this time the bread was very thin, flat, and certainly nothing like any brioche I've experienced. Very much different from the french toast we enjoyed so many times previously. In fact, when it was presented to hubby, we looked at one another in amazement because the serving size looked like a child's portion (two pieces of flat bread, nothing special, cut in half, accompanied by a small portion of fresh fruit. We should have said something, however, we did not...which we now regret. Our server was a delightful woman who was more than happy to recommend other places to dine while we were in Boone, and I guess we just didn't want to rock the boat.
I am a photographer, and tend to capture on film pretty much every dining experience that is memorable. I have several photos of our plateful/s of Stick Boys' french toast from our previous trip (along with their great fried potato cake) that dominated our week's cuisine in 2015. This year was a total disappointment. In retrospect, I did enjoy my Mount Arti, and quite pleased that I did not opt for the french toast.
What can I say? Because of our french toast anticipation, which we even talked about in the car during this trip to Boone, we felt very let down, and did not return. Unfortunately, this was our experience.
