Bush camping

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 7 Aug 2020
We loved the quiet serenity of the place. Booked early, no dramas, above the river, fire.
Showers barely adequate but if you want 5 star don't go camping!
Definitely need to book ahead. You can camp anywhere on the station if you have 4x4 or camp near Homestead with hard road access. No power, water.

We spent 3 days / 2 nights here. First night we stayed on the homestead. It was nice and yes like others have commented it was quite busy / a little cramped but we found everyone friendly and managed to get ourselves a nice spot just back from the river. The facilities were okay, I only used the toilets (old but what you expect in the bush/camping) not the showers. The bush camping - on the other side of the river - was excellent. While you need a 4WD and would be more limited with a caravan or trailer (rough - but very fun terrain!) we were able to drive an hour and 10 minutes into the property to find a beautiful spot right on the river, not another camper in sight! Will definitely come back again and just go straight for the bush camping. My only slightly negative feedback - was that the staff weren't overly friendly/welcoming. We understand we were there in a very busy time (post covid 19 restrictions lifting) but as first timers it felt a little disconcerting to receive a bit of a brisk welcome and not a lot of information beyond the bare essentials. Also getting told off quite rudely for mistakenly picking up some wood by one of the owners wasn't exactly what I would call hospitality - popped it back and apologised and understand there are probably lots of visitors who push the boundaries/rules but in our case it was an innocent mistake and just left a bit of a bad taste from what was otherwise an incredibly beautiful place.

The station itself is ok to stay overnight, but the amenities were far below standard. Camped and dirty. There were spacious camp sites along the Murchison River. The cost I believe was excessive considering the poor condition of amenities.

Camped for 3 nights during October 2019. Not what was expected. Opted for bush camping hoping to find a nice spot near the river upstream of the station but the tracks were so bad had to backtrack to a more easily accessed spot not far from the homestead or risk vehicle/trailer damage. After a few nights there the ticks found us. Ticks in our bedding, ticks crawling on us, ticks burrowing into our skin, my poor wife just about went insane! We took a rough unmaintained rocky track to the mouth of the river to turn around on a safe spot on the beach (about 50m from the end of the track) to come straight back again as we knew that beach driving was verbatim . We didn't do any beach driving (though there were plenty of tyre tracks leading off into the distance from those who obviously have). A couple of hours later we get a phone call from someone from the station accusing us of driving on the beach and that we had been reported by the Shire! That was very upsetting as we had done the right thing and had only turned around to come straight back! One wonders where the $50 access fee goes? Obviously not on track maintenance? There are tracks going everywhere with little or no signage so it is very easy to get lost. The map (which you have to leave a $20 deposit for) is near on useless. Took a rough sandy track exploring the property only to be met by a herd of cows and an annoyed looking bull probably bigger than the size of our car! It was eying us off so quickly into reverse for us and outa there! Driving through the homestead area itself is an eye opener. Everything looks very run down. With the amount of old machinery and cars/trucks in various state of disrepair the whole scene is like something out of Mad Max! If you love ticks, getting lost, angry bulls and accused of wrong doings you haven't done then this is the place for you!

A great place to get back to nature. We stayed in the one of the many camping areas on this 350,000 acre station, the caravan parking was full but this did not deter us. All the camping information was presented in a friendly and low key manner which I always appreciate. There is just so many open spaces to pitch the camper and no one within coo-ee of you. Unusually there was ad-hoc campfire rings in some areas and if you followed the advice given and picked up the deadwood around, you could spend a few pleasant hours sitting around the fire just talking sh*t as is normal.
Highly recommended for the true "Back to nature experience' as in no water and no toilets to hand. A 4 wheel drive vehicle is mandatory if you go further than 1Km into the property and past the initial 'Army Camp' spot. The roads further on degrade quite a bit but are not that daunting with the proper kit and low tire pressures.

Room tip: Take a proper vehicle, sufficient water and a spade

We stayed at the homestead for 3 nights in our caravan. The road in was pretty corrugated, so we were pleased our van is an off-roader. That said, our spot on the river was beautiful and peaceful. Although the campgrounds were busy because of school holidays, we felt we had adequate privacy. There is no power or water, so it is important to be self-sufficient in that respect. Being so close to town, we had excellent wifi coverage, and could recharge our devices in the camp kitchen. The ablutions are reasonable, with more hot water and water pressure than I was expecting, although the damp floor and shower curtains were a bit off-putting. This would be a great spot to stay with a family because of the animals and adventures to be had. We would stay again.
