a wonderful place to stay to feel as though you have stepped back into the gold rush era - I would not been surprised if Dame Nellie Melba had floated down the stairs!! Every where you looked there was an interesting lamp, table or picture and the guest lounge is an incredible room. Even though it has this fabulous "Days gone by" feel Mauro has still ensured the hotel has modern day comforts. The wine bar was relaxing and the breakfast simple but very adequate. Great location near the train station and a few minutes walk into town.

Room Tip: be aware there is a number of stairs.

We had a truly fabulous and unique experience at Mauro's wonderful hotel and bar in historic Castlemaine. If you want something away from the bland sameness of your average hotel or motel then head for The Midland. You enter this hotel and you step back in time to an Agatha Christie mystery or a Phrynne Fisher story. The wonderful decor, an idiosyncratic blend of Art Deco, Morocco and Victorian opulence is a joy. But best of all is your host, Mauro, who presides over The Mauroccan, a bar exuding class and sophistication of a bygone era. We were treated like royalty and will be back for more very soon, sporting a fez and fan.

The Midland is a very good place to stay and enjoy the period features of the building. The wine bar is a good place to relax and there is a nice courtyard to enjoy. A very good place to base yourself in Castlemaine.

Well-located, well-appointed accommodation in Castlemaine with an amazing guest lounge and lovely bar. Wonderful hospitality - Mauro is a great host - and we were relaxed as soon as we arrived. Loved staying in unique accommodation with so much charm...we'll be back.

What a wonderful place to meet friends for sunday afternoon drinks and a chat. The place is enchanting and the staff just lovely. Nothing was a problem and the atmosphere was extremely old world and pleasing.
