When my fiance and I arrived for our stay, the hotel did not have our reservation on file so I was asked to forward my reservation confirmation e-mail to them. Not sure where the mix-up occurred but they did try to be as accommodating as possible and we appreciated the customer service. While they were addressing the reservation issue, they gave us our room keys so that we could settle in. Our room was very dark, worn down and had an odor. The bathroom looked dirty. There was probably at least a dozen dead mosquitoes/flies on the floor and another dozen flying in the room. After talking with the reception, we were eventually moved to another room which was better but still not up to par with what I would expect even from a category 2 Marriott property. The second room still had many mosquitoes but was improved when a cleaning lady came to spray the room for bugs at 8 pm. This explains why there were so many dead bugs on the floor in our first room. I would think they would do this prior to the room being occupied so it could be cleaned afterwards. We slept in long pants and long sleeves that night because even though we had mosquito net around our bed there were still holes in the net where the mosquitoes were able to get through. We even had a gecko in our bathroom.
The hotel location itself is about 10-15 minutes away from stone town. We enjoyed the hotel dock which was quite nice to sit on and enjoy the ocean breeze. The complimentary shuttle service to stone town was also convenient. It seems like the pool and beach bar area of the property is heavily frequented by locals so it was busy and noisy during our stay.
Overall, this property has potential but is in desperate need of improvement. Customer service was good but room conditions need to be improved drastically especially given the price point of the rooms and the association with the Marriott name. Disappointed with our stay but hoping this property will get some needed renovations in the near future.
