Me and a friend spent our final afternoon on Zanzibar here after it was recommended by a friend for a relaxing beach location with the hotel facilities. For 20000Tsh, you get the private hotel beach with sun loungers, lovely pier, bar and restaurant, toilets, outdoor shower and pool. The charge also gives you a token to spend that much on drinks and food ad an hour of wifi. Beautiful place. Clear sea that's great for swimming in. Panoramic views of the sea from the hotel and pier. Gorgeous sunset too. Food and drinks are good too!

Protea has got alot of perks and amenities other hotels just dont. The ruins it manages really set it far above the rest and the service is world class. I truly enjoyed my stay. Will be coming back around very soon.

Upon arriving at the hotel we were greeted with cold glasses of mango passion fruit juice and a towel to clean our hands as we checked in. It was the best hotel greeting/check-in that I've received in my life. It was a very nice touch that set the tone for the remainder of our stay. Our room was more gorgeous than the pictures I'd seen online and we had a balcony view of the beach. The hotel grounds were a bit like a maze, filled with all types of foliage, that added a sense of wonder and mystery, which I loved. However, there are ample signs to guide you. The Protea restaurant is also very beautiful, set under an enormous hut, and the service was excellent. However, the food was less traditional than I expected and more a fuse of American, Asian, and Italian; so if you're interested in trying local food, like Ugali, go elsewhere. The beach was amazing! We stayed at Protea during the week so the beach was very quiet and peaceful. The hotel also offers a free shuttle to Stone town so definitely take advantage. My one regret is that we only stayed two nights.

I had my special dinner in Zanzibar in the wooden terrace in front of the ocean. The kitchen is made by a real chef. He able to use spices of high level.
In my opinion never try similar taste on Zanzibar. The garden of restaurant is amazing. A lot of kind of giant tropical plants in a big garden including Ruins. In the lower level there is a jetty between a mangrovian plants growing in the beach. I think is a place that really make you in a tropical dream into Zanzibar Islands.

We have used this place several times for Zanzibar getaways, and ownership has changed several times over the last years. It is perfectly located on a private beach just ouside Stonetown, a great place to combine a beach vacation in an exotic ruin garden with the pleasures of Stonetown. After Protea took over a couple of years ago, we had hopes for improvement on a number of issues. However, our hopes and dreams have still not been fulfilled.

On check-in we were pleasantly surprised, with both friendly and efficient service. Also we noticed that the jetty was improved and that the beach was clean and well kept. Also, some features in the rooms were improved, especially getting new and modern safes in place is good progress, and the rooms are clean and tidy.

Unfortunately, the rooms, buildings and the other area still show need for maintenance, with light bulbs missing and a general need for renovation. Also the bathrooms show need for investment in modern interor, and please do not go for the absolute crappiest and cheapest this time.

However, the worst is the service. Both in the restaurant and especially on the beach service is extremely bad, even by African standards. At breakfast we were addressed and given coffee when we arrived, after that there were no information about how food was arranged and a group of staff were clearly more interested in internal discussions than attending the guests. Add that the food was nothing to brag about, and the experience was really not good.

The beach bar is even worse. Around the bar area numerous security staff is gathered occupied in apparently exciting discussions with three staff not attending the guests at the beach in any way. When five people at the beach bar is not able to produce the bill because the responsible at the bar is not there, and they ask the guest to wait indefinitely for someone else to show up, service has hit rock bottom!!!

The whole service situation screams bad management. Staff is plentyful, but they are not doing their jobs, and guests are not getting any attention. It may be that Ramadan affected staff's attentiveness, but this service is just not good enough with the competition increasing in Zanzibar. Location saves three stars, but if service is not dramatically improved, we will look for an alternative for our next trip here.

Dear Inge S

Good day, thank you for staying with us and taking time to write this honest review pointing out both the positives and negatives. While we value all positive reviews, it is constructive criticisms such as these that help us improve our products and services. I am extremely sorry to hear that we didn't offer you a memorable experience, which is what we strive for - for each and every GUEST. I assure you that your review has been taken very seriously and every point mentioned in the same has been discussed in detail with the Management as well as individual TEAM members & departments concerned. I am glad to inform you that a full fledged renovation, which we had planned to do last year but got delayed due to various reasons, is set to commence by August first week. This will be done in phases, blocks-wise and only during day time to ensure our GUESTS enjoy their stay with minimal disturbances. Post renovation, all 13 rooms will feature 100% brand new bathrooms ( with branded fittings, no cheap stuff I promise :-) we don't use cheap or unreliable brands in any of our bathrooms) and bedrooms which will look and feel new, but will also maintain the Zanzibari touch while being functional. We will also be investing in uplifting the public areas and make them more beautiful than they already are. I apologise for the shortfalls in the service delivery. We will immediately reevaluate our service standards and ensure that measures are put in place to consistently deliver the same, great & friendly service that we are known for. I request you not to form a general opinion based on this single experience and give us another chance to win you back. I am positive that all of what i mentioned above will be done by the time you visit us again and we will ensure that you have a 100% satisfactory stay with us. I will be glad to assist you with your next booking & perhaps meet you during your stay to see if you feel we have kept our word & delivered on my aforementioned promises! Kindly contact me directly on gm@proteadar.com and i will assist you to the best of my ability.

Thanks and regards,
