“all inclusive or not”
Reviewed 23 April 2012

We stayed here in February 2012, family of nine adults. The hotel grounds are very nice and kept in good condition. The pools are both nice, again well maintained. Rooms clean and reasonable furnished. The biggest asset of this hotel are the staff, friendly, helpful and well mannered. We took the free week with the all inclusive option. There is only one bar in the hotel situated in the middle of the two pools and the restaurant. Waiter service 11am to 11pm for AI. The drinks are ok but only have 3 alcoholic cocktails all of which taste similar, no martini or cinzano. Red, white and rose wine OK. You have to sign everytime you have a drink or something to eat. Snacks at the bar are not included in the AI. The mini bar in the room is also not included. The rooms have a kettle but the tea and coffee is NOT included (take your own)
Only 1 AI Restaurant, food is of good quality but only one choice of meat and fish each time, no seafood, no soup, only had ice cream once in 2 weeks. Meat was cooked to continental taste (red in the middle) Indian dishes good but all vegatarian.Would not suit anyone who does not like spicy food. We were told we could ask for an alternative if we found we did not like the food but when we did we were always only offered chicken and chips. Breakfast great, best bacon ever and eggs cooked to your liking. Biggest drawback to this hotel is the fact that it only has a small beach with limited sunbeds and no facilities to get a drink, you have to cross back over the road to the hotel for a drink. Beach was very rough with coral, you need shoes to go in the sea. Water sports, kayak, pedalo and glass bottom boat good. Entertainment in hotel was fair with a couple of good groups. You can get a bus outside the hotel to Grand Bai about 50p each way, big supermarket there (like asda) and lots of designer shops, takes about 25 mins. Hotel provides pool towels which are ok but the towels in the rooms are like sandpaper. Travelled with mercury,Air Mautitius flights were excellent but rep in resort was not very helpful. Overall good hotel but needs to sort out the AI package

Direction11, General Manager at Casuarina Resort & Spa, responded to this review, 24 April 2012
We wish to thank you for your constructive comments which are overall satisfactory and would, however, like to point out the following:-

>The All Inclusive Package is subject to a mutual agreement between the Hotel and the Tour Operator and being based on a defined budget.
>We have invested huge sums of money on the Casuarina Resort & Spa beach which has been reprofiled recently further to an EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment). Our guests can relax under the “paillottes” on one of the most beautiful beaches of the North of the island, Trou-aux-Biches.
>Cyclone Giovana had a heavy blow on Mauritius on 11th and 12th February 2012. Following which, there were plenty of corals on the beach; the necessary actions were taken as soon as possible to clean it up.
>As regards to the food, seafood is available in our Tree Top restaurant with a supplement to pay.
>Soup is not part of our buffet given that the temperature is quite high but available in winter. Nevertheless, we shall keep your requests in mind and consider your suggestions with the Chef.
>Ice-cream is served on the buffet once a week, mainly on Saturdays.
>Any alternative food requested can be either meat, fish or chicken with chips or salad.
>Meat is cooked to continental taste but it can still be served depending upon the guest’s needs, either well done or medium.

We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you at a later date.

First time in Mauritius so took some time to get the hang of it, the Casuarina is a lovely Hotel, well placed, we had a nice view over the ponds, gardens and sea, one night kept awake by the randy frogs croaking for their mates due to heavy rain but all part of the experience. As others have commented, we couldn't get our heads round the all inclusive, the staff are generally very helpful but the is it, isn't it got on our nerves at first and we still aren't sure what was AI, anyway, we booked AI for the first week on the understanding we could book a further week there or go independent.

The food and service is great if not a bit canteenish after a while, the non AI food tasted much better so don't know why this was the case but overall no complaints, some staff very good, a few need a bit more experience, we couldn't find much Indian food so still a bit confused about this. We opted for independent in the second week as the cost was much higher than if we'd booked in advance in the UK and be wary, there is very few restaurants or bars nearby, a stroll down to the town is hot and exhausting and there aren't a lot of choices, go for the Mine Bouille or fried noodles on the beach or wherever, always great value and tasty, as reported, the pineapples on a stick are to die for, they grow just about every tropical fruit you can imagine, some seasonal and they are cheap, £1 or so.

Vijay on the beach is the man for trips and excursions, much cheaper than the rep and the quality we found very high, he will introduce himself anyway, the beach is ok and you can stroll either way as far as you like, left towards Trous Biches or right towards Choisy Beach, the largest public and best kept I have ever seen, they had the Tamil New Year Festival when we stayed and one of the highlights, an advantage of going independent, we hired a car from Marina car rental, a chap called Gerard gave us a nice deal for six days and it was worth not being tied to the Hotel and felt like another holiday, we went South to the mountains, waterfalls, more beaches, Flic en Flac, another resort, not as nice as the North but there are so many beautiful beaches you lose count.

We went to Grand Baie most nights to eat and it is not cheap and there are not as many places as you would think, the best we found was the Beach House, an amazing place, very good food, music and right on another lovely beach, quite a few pizza type places, a high quality sea food restaurant and a place called Chez Ram we found on the last night, very, very good value and some of the best food we found, the roads are good but be careful of the ambush dogs, there are dogs everywhere, normally very friendly until you meet a car hating one, they upset my partner and daughter as you get the impression either the car or the dog has to die.

Breakfast is nice and plentiful in the Hotel, outside, the best places we found were the Coffee Lounge, on the coast road to Grand Baie and Place Muller in the town, otherwise its a struggle to find, the island does seem concentrated into the resort hotels which is a shame as you miss the beachfront atmosphere, inland the villages and towns vary greatly, avoid places like Goodlands (ironically named) and get a good road map, the tourist version is useless, keep exploring and you will keep finding new and deserted tropical beaches, my ten year old on seeing another said, Oh, not another tropical beach, you get the picture.

Room Tip: Rooms vary and are very private, the higher you are the better the view, try and get sea view or pon...

Third time at the Casuarina and had another excellent holiday.Booked with Mercury Direct again they are very professional no problems as usual.Flew with Emirates from Newcastle to Dubai then on to Mauritius excellent service they are the best airline we have flown on.Picked up at the airport and transferred to the hotel, welcomed with a towel and cold drink recognised by the staff as a returning guest. The staff are all pleasant from the waiters, barstaff, cleaners to the gardeners they all acknowledge you .Stayed in room 107 overlooking the beach. The room was cleaned to a very high standard.the air conditioning worked well. The food was very good with lots of choices we were all-inclusive and always found plenty to eat.Reading previous reviews the Indian food is now available to everyone it was spicy but enjoyed it and was available each night. Each night has a theme with lots of choices. My wife thought the desserts were very good. The hotel for the first week was busy and some days beds were limited on the beach but there are two swimming pools and beds were available there. The weather was red hot for the first ten days,we had a couple of rainy days then the sun came out again.A bus service passes the hotel it is worth trips to Grand Baie and Port Louis bus fare to Grand Baie 22 Rupees(50p) go over the Pelican crossing turn left down to the bus stand. To go to Port Louis turn left outside the hotel and walk down to the bus stand about 800 yards 28 Rupees it is an experience to travel on the buses. Most of the staff at the hotel were there two years ago it was nice to meet them again. It was nice to meet the Manager again he is always available chats to the guests and appreciates your comments. The service you get in Mauritius is second to none,we always enjoy our holidays there.

This hotel makes life difficult for itself. Each nationality seem to be on a different package and it is not clear to start with what is included and what is not - you have to sign for everything. As stated by others there are some rather odd things such as bottles of water and tea / coffee which is chargeable in the room but not from the bar. The lunch and evening meal lacks variety and is largely salad, curry or creole. We did discover however that at lunch time you could ask for steak or chicken and chips which made a pleasant change. The staff are wonderful with a good sense of humour, the whole place is kept spotlessly clean and the rooms are reasonably spacious and comfortable. The grounds are attractive and the buildings are white many of which have thatched roofs. Any one interested in watersports would find this hotel great as the water skiing is included in the package.
We travelled with Mercury and everything was arranged well although the meeting with the rep should have been much more informative as to how the all inclusive package worked - the trips on offer were expensive and as others have said Vijay on the beach is the man to see and he is professional, well organised and half the price. The hotel does offer the Tree Tops restaurant which was very good but also very expensive and only open 3 nights a week - probably because the patronage is low because of the high supplement.
Every evening there was entertainment in the bar usually provided by a band, sometimes with dancers, which we found very good but most guests seemed not to bother.
This is a lovely hotel and we had great holiday and you felt the Hotel staff and management were keen to make sure everyone had a good holiday.
