“Decent fried seafood”
Review of Gene's Fish Fry

Gene's is a seasonal fried seafood place that alos offers burgers and other regular fast fare. The food is decent but, to be honest, I was expecting more authenticity. The fried scallop sandwich was a handful of battered, fired scallop on a hot dog bun. They were fried to order and, therefore, were fresh, but the coating tasted too much like battered seafood from a bag at the grocery store. I was hoping for more of a homemade batter.

My root beer float was likewise disappointing. Not enough ice cream and I have never cared for Barq's. If you like Barq's you will likely be happier than I was.

So why does it get a rating of three? There aren't enough fast fish fry sandwich places like this one around. Skipper's, Long John's and company are just too mass-produced. This building is a throwback to the days of local drive-in and walkup joints of the 70s. The help was friendly. And the homemade cocktail sauce is divine with a touch of horseradish. Well worth a visit.

Limited menu, daily lunch special but nothing special about this place. As mentioned there is no inside seating just picnic benches under the awning., order at the window and wait. My cheeseburger was just that. condiments are on the counter and limited to relish catsup, mustard and chopped onions. Onion rings are real but mine were a bit over fried.

Have been here many times and remains my goto place for summertime quick food. I would highly recommend, much better than the other fish fry places in the capital district.

Good food
Good portions
Friendly service
Conveniently located on Rt 4 in North Greenbush near intersection with Target, Home Depot and Walmart. It's right next to a Mobile Gas station - parking lot entrance is between the Fish Fry and the Mobile. Exit only in rear.
Worth the stop

Too much oil, too much of a bad batter, not enough fish. Little service, does not accept credit cards, dirty restrooms, poor quality seafood. We were driving from Vermont to New Jersey and looked up a family friendly fried fish restaurant. Actually had to go about 20 minutes out of our way to find Gene's. It was a waste of time! Perhaps they had something going on in the past - certainly not at the time of this posting. To improve - they need a better quality fish, more of it, less of a bad batter, cleaner oil, more customer service and a restroom that is acceptable for customers.
