Gene's is a seasonal fried seafood place that alos offers burgers and other regular fast fare. The food is decent but, to be honest, I was expecting more authenticity. The fried scallop sandwich was a handful of battered, fired scallop on a hot dog bun. They were fried to order and, therefore, were fresh, but the coating tasted too much like battered seafood from a bag at the grocery store. I was hoping for more of a homemade batter.
My root beer float was likewise disappointing. Not enough ice cream and I have never cared for Barq's. If you like Barq's you will likely be happier than I was.
So why does it get a rating of three? There aren't enough fast fish fry sandwich places like this one around. Skipper's, Long John's and company are just too mass-produced. This building is a throwback to the days of local drive-in and walkup joints of the 70s. The help was friendly. And the homemade cocktail sauce is divine with a touch of horseradish. Well worth a visit.
