Why go elsewhere for the sunset?

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 11 Oct 2008
The Calderas Lillium was a great place to stay, and made for a very relaxing few days. The hotel is relatively small and intimate, but in my opinion, this just added to the stay. Breakfast offered a good selection of pastries, fruit, greek yoghurt etc and the restaurant, despite being quiet on the occasions we ate dinner, was of a fairly high standard.
We always found the staff to be helpful and mostly friendly and courteous. The room was of a generous size and cleaned to a very good standard.
The pool itself was located in a great spot with never tiring views. Pity about the sun lounger hoggers, who would "reserve" the prime spots with a towel during (and even before) breakfast, disappear off for a few hours and then turn up after lunch.
The hotel is expensive, as is Santorini in general, although what you get is a relaxing experience and in my opinion it was worth the premium to escape the crowded larger hotel.

a pleasant hotel although i would definitely class it as more of a motel. quite a walk from the town however they did have a car available at certain times. the restaurant was not open in the evening although it was stated in the brochure as worth a visit! the bar was sporadic in the evening shutting as early as ten o'clock. the pool was lovely and the views stupendous, in fact, save your feet and don't bother going to oia for the sunset as the views from the lilium are just as good.
if you have dodgy knees make sure you book the rooms (floors 1-3)by the pool as the steps are very steep to the lower floors. the rooms are very clean and spacious.
overall the whole visit to the lilium was disappointing as the basics,. restaurant etc.. were not available which was not good enough as they were advertised as standard.
also if you do visit oia, and do, it is very pretty do not eat in The Red Bicycle restaurant as it is very expensive and was the worst meal we had the whole week.16 euros for a piece of moussaka the size of a small sandwich and nothing else at all on the plate!!!

Unfortunately two staff incidents at this hotel made this Amazing Hotel and stay in Santorini disappointing for my partner, Sister and myself.
The Hotel location was fine if you have you own transport to which we didn't have a problem with. The rooms were decent and clean and the view was spectacular during the day and even more so at sunset.
The service on the front desk during the day was what you would expect but the after hour staff and the staffs during the day around the poolside were absolutely disgusting and rude. We were yelled at by the front office night staff because we complained for waiting 15min at the front desk at 2am for someone to hand us a key to our room his excuse was that he was on the toilet with a newspaper (you would expect someone to be there at all times) also the day poolside bar staff totally ignored us when we wanted to order lunch .
I expect a certain standard of service when paying as much as we did and this was totally unacceptable.
What is sad that this hotel has so much potential?

The Lilium has the best few on the island as it is located centrally on the Caldera and the sunset is unbelievable. The staff is not real professional at the front desk and when you get to the lobby it is very small and it feels like a motel six when you enter, however, the swimming pool area and bar area and bartender are great! Beautiful beautiful sunset! This pool area is a 5 star! Our accommodations our first night were two twin beds stuck together and wreaked of smoke and we could not stay in the room. They gave us the suite that night and we had to move the next day to a room with a queen bed, which was so much better. Rememberer the rooms are minimalist so don't expect too much from the room, what you get here is the view. They did not answer any emails prior to our arrival regarding transportation to & from the port, however, they were there to great us but I had to call them to find out where to meet our driver. Transportation cost 12 euros each way to port or airport. Lots of steps to get down to the rooms which is part of the uniqueness of Santorini itself. This hotel is centrally located about 2 miles from Fira and quite a walk at night 5 euros by Taxi. Highly recommend renting a car on this island due to the long narrow island and getting to OIA is a must! All the picture postcards of Greece must have been taken in OIA. Also Blue Lagoon sunset sail - the best and great food!! Highly recommend! Stay away from Selenes (highly rated, expensive and poor quality of food but go next door to the 1518 restaurant - expensive but worth it!

Caldera's Lilium Villa is awesome. As other reviewers have mentioned, the view is incredible. All of the villas are set within the cliffside -- the rooms are cool without even needing to be air conditioned (though they do have AC units), which is such an amazing feeling after spending all day in the summer heat. They rooms are sparse and beautiful with white and blue decor; the beds are comfortable; and they give you a free bottle of wine! Each villa also have a balcony and since each villa faces the amazing caldera view, every single room has an amazing view. I cannot explain how amazing it is to be swimming in their beautiful pool, relaxing on the awesome pool side chaise lounges, and looking out over the beauty that is the Santorini caldera. You feel like you are at the edge of the world. The staff is very friendly and eager to guide you around the island and the location is good -- close enough to Fira to walk to but outside of it enough to not feel hectic at all. This hotel is very very highly recommended -- I hope that life brings me here again!!

We spent a week at the Caldera Lilium Villas in June 08. Great location on the Caldera rim, classic views of the sunset over the caldera. We had a nice room with a small private balcony on the third floor overlooking the pool. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful, the Barman / Dinner restaurant waiter was also very friendly, super efficient and helped us make the most of our time on Santorini with some good tips on where to go and what to see. The hotel is a 20 min walk from Fira on a busy road, but they do provide a free shuttle bus into Fira and back 3-4 times a day which is a great service. The only moan we had was the breakfast service was a bit slow and the buffet wasn't up to scratch for this price hotel.
