“Village place accessible on foot only, aesthetic decor, kitchen minimally equipped, rude & libellous e-mails from owner”
Reviewed 3 October 2015 for a stay in September 2015
people found this review helpful

In Finikia village, 25 minutes' walk away from central Oia (PitoGyros), over half an hour along a stony footpath from the black stony Paradisos beach (and a bit less than that from Sigalas winery) - usually with strong waves, making swimming difficult. Half an hour's drive away from Firá airport with light traffic on the lower road. NOT easily accessible by car; the closest space you can leave a vehicle--if you find a space--is 10 minutes' walk away along narrow stony winding footpaths (not convenient when you have heavy luggage or want to spare its wheels). From the main gate it is still two flights of narrow outside stairs to reach the entrance to the room.
If you arrive by bus, the place is about 6 minutes away from the Atlantida Villas stop (you need to notify the driver in advance, and sometimes they'll drop you off one stop before that). The nearest small grocery shop is 15 minutes' walk away; bakeries, a butcher's (open in the morning only) and supermarkets with more local prices need at least a 20 minutes' walk, part of it along an unpleasantly congested main road. For fresh fish and a wider choice of veg you need to drive to the morning market in central Firá or the Argyronisos fish store in Karterados.

The owner would respond to emails very fast *but see the EDIT below*. Mr Grigoris who looks after the house helped us carry one suitcase from the bus stop to the house, and then to our car on departure day, and lent us a smaller pot and a blender, but sometimes our impression was that he'd rather be left unbothered.
Over a 7-day stay, our linens and towels were changed once of the housekeeper's accord (on day 3); 3 days later we needed to go down and ask to have the towels changed again.
You are asked to take your trash out yourself to the nearest communal bin (meaning first two flights of stairs down from your room to the entrance to the premises, and then more steps up the stony footpath - altogether well over 100 steps one way).

The apartment is on two levels: lower floor for the living room with small kitchen space and bathroom, and a small bedroom up wooden steps (watch your head!). Both the inside and outside look nice and aesthetic, but many solutions are regrettably far from functional. In the bedroom, even if you're quite short you have to watch your head on both sides of the bed. The washbasin in the bathroom is quite small; there is no space for the dishdryer next to the sink, and the dishdryer itself is too light to hold the larger plates (it will topple over if you try) while too wide to hold the small ones. The stove cannot accommodate both the pasta pot and the frying pan at the same time.
The living room comes with two couches, a table, a flat-screen TV and free WiFi. The small kitchen space is a far cry away from "fully equipped" and "fully functional" as the website claims: there is a fridge, paper filter-type coffee maker, small electric stove top (glass-ceramic plate) with two burners, a frying pan and a pasta pot with lid (both too big to be used on the stove at once), some cutlery, plates, cups and glasses, a large salad bowl, a grater, spatula, slotted spoon and corkscrew. NO OVEN (!), no sieve, no whisk, no masher, no blender, no extractor hood (so the cooking smell permeates the whole space and drifts up to the bedroom).
It took us a while to figure out why all our ice-cream and meat in the freezer and butter had melted when we got back in the evening, only to find out that the fridge powers off when you go outside (it must have been connected to the same electrical installation as the sensor for placing the door key, which switches off within 60 seconds of taking the keys out) - we had to throw away two thirds of our food. This is simply unacceptable (especially if you have any medication you need to keep chilled). In the small bedroom there is air-con, a radio/CD player, and reading lights. There is no safe box or phone. You can hear your neighbours having sex, as well as the fridge.
The shower has both a fixed showerhead and an adjustable nozzle. The water supply can be a bit unstable, depending on whether soemone else in the house isn't using it at the same time, but overall usable. No toiletries are provided except for liquid soap.
There is a terrace with two chairs and a table, from which you can see the sunset.
The place is moderately clean. The linens and towels were fresh, but most of the cushion covers in the living room had yellowed stains (see photo), and the glasses hadn't been washed properly. Also, a colony of ants had settled under the stovetop and it was only on the third morning of our stay that most of them crawled out and could be removed (see photo; the visibly larger one is the queen, proof that the colony had been there for a while).
There are three cats wandering around the premises, which will jump onto the terrace table and eat into your food before you've managed to cut the bread (ask the couple staying at Scirocco). They also like to lounge on the terrace chairs. Apart from guarding your food (or, as this is difficult, choosing to eat indoors) this of course also means that you're advised to wash the table with a detergent before every meal.

EDIT: A few days after we submitted the review, we received from Mr Antonis Gavalas the owner a very rude, aggressive and libellous e-mail full of unbelievably insolent and fictitious accusations (it is very telling that no problems or objections whatsoever were voiced by either the caretaker or the owner during our stay, but then days after seeing a review they do not like they retaliate with a barrage of made-up defamatory allegations), comparing us to pigs, promising to literally kick us out if he sees us again, and threatening that our review will never be published anywhere (TripAdvisor policy doesn't permit quoting correspondence, but feel free to get in touch and we'll send you the originals).
Let us gloss over the most prepostrous fabrications (suffice it to say that over the past few years we had stayed at over 70 different places, and not once had the owners or staff ever complained - feel free to browse our other reviews; 100% of my 69 references on CouchSurfing are likewise positive, from both guests and hosts) and just emphasise that we hadn't broken any item during our stay, left everything intact, washed all the plates, glass and cutlery, and on departure we segregated the trash leaving it in 2 places: kitchen and bathroom waste in a tied bin bag outside, and PET bottles and dry empty plastic shopping bags in the kitchen annex next to the rubbish bin (we didn't have the time to take the trash all the way to the communal village container, because we needed to catch an early morning flight). The veracity of our original review you can easily verify yourselves by looking at the enclosed photographic documentation, maps, or physical inspection on the spot. If you write to us, we are able to supply more than abundant auxiliary evidence proving the facts stated in our initial review (and exposing the owner's blatant lies).

As if that were not enough, after the owner published his response to our review - coming up with an even more creative inventory of apparent misdeeds - he wrote to us again telling us to enjoy the 'humiliating' review response and that 'lying' (look who's talking!) has 'unpredictable consequences' (again, feel free to contact us for the correspondence; it makes a lovely read). We think this speaks for itself and requires no commentary.

So there: You go to Greece to help an economy in crisis, you leave nearly €1,100 at Fava Eco Residences without getting what you had booked and paid for (a "fully equipped" and "fully functional" kitchen--per website description, which was one of the main criteria why we had booked this place--that does not even have an oven, and where your food gets spoilt because the fridge powers off), taking care not to disturb and wake up Mr Grigoris in the mornings when he was sleeping after 9 a.m. (ask the lady staying at Helios), leaving the place intact and clean (and the glassware cleaner than when we had arrived), only to be insolently offended with a shower of abuse, blatant lies and intimidation attempts after having paid and left because you have dared to point out the drawbacks (instead of the owner using the feedback constructively to fix the shortcomings). Never before have we met with similar treatment. Every intelligent reader will be able to make a reasoned judgment themselves.

The couple [--] stayed in my house at late August for one week.
It was obvious from day one that they were not respecting the house rules at all.
Only to mention few of the damages they caused:
>Broken plates and glasses. Not washing any plates during their stay.
>Damaged plasma TV by hanging wet towels and swisuits on it.
>Blocked toilet, till the plummer came to fix it, due to a whole roll of toiled paper that was deep stuck in.
>Putting themselves and photographing the cats on the dining table.
>Leaving half eaten food and garbage all over the house every day.
>Only once throwing their garbage to the local bin.
>Annoying the neighboring houses by causing excessive noise.
I asked them repeatedly and in a very kind way to take more care of the property.
They ignored me and even did more harm on purpose (such as the toilet issue).
At the end of their stay i asked them to pay for the approximately 400 Euros damages they caused and told them that they are not welcome to return to my house in the future.
They denied to pay and as soon as they left did the initial review that was rejected afterwards from Tripadvisor. They did two more efforts that were also judged as not respecting the rules of Tripadvisor community and therefore were removed.
The imaginary communication that is very creatively and vividly described in their review is 100% fake. Every reasonably thinking reader will understand that since Fava Eco Residences have 52 TripAdvisor Reviews (82% of them are 5 star ones, the rest are 4 star ones except this one), not to mention the over 200 reviews on other major house listing websites with more than 85% being 5 star ones, there is something wrong with the guest review, not the house or the owner. All other reviews state clearly how friendy and professional the whole team of Fava owners and staff has always been. Every comment for improvement that has come from so many of your happy previous guests has been very helpful to the great success Fava Eco Residences have every year.

The deliberate publication of wrong and untrue information for a property is against the laws and ethics of TripAdvisor.

Regarding their comments i have to state the following:
> "Pitogyros" is 1.500 meters away, at the other far end of Oia. It is not considered central Oia.
> We change linen and towels every two days, meaning twice during their stay. Not once.
> The closest trash bin is just 35 steps and 60 meters from your house door. Not more than 100 steps.
> Of course the fridge does never swich off, unless if you swich it off yourselves. It has a separate electrical supply line.
> The guests asked during their stay things such as mixer, wok, electric BBQ, orange squezzer, which have been provided to them in any case.
> Due to local building regulations for preserved historical buildings, such as this house, spaces cannot be all very large, they must keep up with their original form. That is the beauty and uniqueness of it.
> Putting the cats on the table for photographing reasons will make the lovely pets get accustomed to it and this is unnacceptable for hygiene reasons.
> Noone till now has ever complained either about the level of clenaliness or the sound insulation.
> In the initial review, the document was also containing lies and innacuracies, though it did not contain fake photos such as number 1 and 6 (the abstract ants on an abstract floor and the pillows that i do not reckognise by shape and form having in any of my houses) or a fictionary communication of such a content and attitude that obviously fits to the reviewer's ethos, qualities and education.

The above review was done only to slander a property and an owner that desires the guests to fundamentally respect the house they stay in.

“Fabulous Fava ; an ideal place to relax and unwind.”
Reviewed 1 August 2015 for a stay in July 2015

Our host was helpful with local information, car hire and trips (wine tour & catamaran amongst the ones we did). Mr Grigoris was extremely helpful on our arrival carrying our heavy luggage up the steps (Thank you!). Fava apartment view was fabulous from our deck area. The apartment is clean and tidy with regular laundry/towel change. I travelled with my 18 year old and our friends and found this an excellent location from which to explore the beautiful island of Santorini. It was a short walk to Oia's stunning restaurants and amazing sunset! (part of the walk is on the road which can be very congested with vehicles heading in and out of Oia at certain times but there is a lovely short coastal path you can walk and avoid the road - access to path across the road from Vazeos car hire on the corner) There was a delicious local restaurant near the apartment, very reasonably priced. Cute wee coffee shop Mes Amis serves a lovely breakfast a 5 min walk away. Wonderful, calm and peaceful, an ideal place to relax and unwind.

“Lovely location and comfortable suite”
Reviewed 23 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

Fava residences are located in the beautiful and picturesque village of Finikia, only about 15' walk from Oia. The location is excellent, quiet, away from the crowds of Oia and still very close to it. It is an excellent place from which to explore Santorini.
Anemos Suite is lovely and comfortable. It is not very big, but has everything you need and the facilities are good. The bedroom is on the upper floor and there are two terraces. The place is perfect for 2 people. Mr Grigoris was a wonderful host, friendly and helpful who gave us a lot of useful information about Santorini.
