“Traditional Food with Caldera view”

The terrace of this restaurant has views over the Caldera, but it is a traditional Greek taverna with reasonable prices (for Oia) so we went there twice out of our 4 nights in Oia. Both Pork Souvlaki and Chicken Souvlaki were tasty and tender. Sea Bream was fresh and well cooked, although it would have been better served with fries rather than tomatoes. All the waiters were friendly and helpful and from Greece (not Albania). The carafes of house wine were very drinkable.

We had our lunch at Kasteli. It takes a longer time for the food being served, the chef seems patience and put in patience in preparing the food. There is no disappointment on the food being served. Among the restaurants we tried at Oia, the restaurant serves best pork steak and kalamari. Must try. The price is average and overall service is not bad.

We notice in our tripadvisor app that this restaurant comes 76 of 76 - what a shame. Note that it only gets a handful of reviews. It took us three nights to realise it was called Kasteli and we have noticed before that restaurants with no clear sign or with a name that is in Greek alphabet do not attract many reviews.

Nearly all of the restaurants in Oia are 'fancy' and expensive. From what we understand, business rates on the Caldera are astronomical so they simply have to be expensive. It's not that we want burger and chips, far from it. But if we order steak and a salad we don't need Jus, coulis, or yet another accompaniment of beetroot concoction.

We loved Kasteli. Yes there are language barriers and Nikos and his lovely father (whose job it is to cook on the giant grill machine - I wish I could take him home and have him cook our dinner forever!!) won't be rushing out to tuck your chair in. We neither need nor want that and as we returned to Kasteli we spoke with Nikos and discovered what a lovely family they are. We ate fantastic Souvlaki and various fresh, copious salads. Each night we ordered water, a half Carafe of wine and Mythos beer and the bill was just under 45 Euros. We ate elsewhere but kept coming back.

I really think the reason for the low ranking is the lack of clear signage and people who like that ultra polite waiter with arm behind the back. People who insist on this kind of service are never going to feel at home in a place such as this.

Thank you Nikos for your hospitality, your fantastic father for superb grilling and lovely lady who brought our bits and bobs. You made us feel at home.

We arrived for dinner to a more than half empty terrace. We ordered a Greek salad and a pork souvlaki. The salad came quite quickly and it was very basic looking and the taste was basic too. The souvlaki arrived 30 minutes later. At one point we thought they may have forgotten about it. We tried to ask the waiters about it but they wouldn't look our way. They didn't provide napkins at all. The inside of the taverna was dirty and smelled awful. We couldn't wait to leave.

Oia is filled with expensive and exclusive restaurants that will bust any budget. For day trippers, this may not be a problem, but we spent 5 nights in Oia as a family of 4. Many of the restaurants just weren't within our budget. We loved Kasteli because it was a small family run taverna where we could eat dinner and enjoy some house wine for under 50 EU for the family. As an added bonus, the taverna has a view of the caldera. It was entertaining to watch the grand father of the family stoke the coals of the grill with an electric hair blow dryer. Yes, the restaurant has paper place mats, but it is a Greek taverna, not haute cuisine. They do not rush their patrons to finish their meals quickly. This is Greece not New York. The grilled octopus, lamb chops and souvlaki were all quite tasty. I highly recommend this restaurant if you want traditional Greek food at a price that won't make your wallet regret your trip to Oia. If you want haute cuisine, try a different restaurant in Oia. God knows there are plenty of those.
