We were received by Andrea and Barbara in the most civilised way possible. The warmth and perfection in every detail was very touching. The house is very well restored and decorated with excellent taste. Breakfast was superb and our hosts local knowledge was very helpful. The bedroom was very comfortable, spotlessly clean and with a wonderful view. As we went in to the hall, the house was filled with cello music which was perfect after a long stressful drive.... We will certainly go back again and would highly recommend l'Ombrière to anyone.

L’Ombriere is one of those special places in the world that combines a lovely setting, comfortable room, wonderful meals, and hosts that you leave with regret. Barbara and Andrea are Italians who searched out the perfect location and remodeled the house with sensitivity and style.

We didn’t have difficulty finding the house, as it is just as it looks on the website. You can enter two ways from the east: when you see the chateau castle of Montfort, just after the Cingle bend in the Dordogne, you’ll see L’Ombriere facing you on the right side of the road, up on the hill. You can either go right on the tiny road opposite the chateau, past the other houses to the very end, or through the two stone gate posts before the chateau (you will see them just after the sign for "Route de Montfort”, if I recall correctly).

The location is perfect for touring in the Dordogne and Lot, set on the hill and right on the D703. We went one way to Beynac, La Roque Gageac, the gardens of Marqueyssac (my favorite), and Domme, and took the little road to the left to Sarlat. Rocamadour was about an hour and 15 minutes to the east. Because it was on a D road, it made it much easier to go to dinner and night and find your way home in the dark - see the chateau, make the turn.

When you climb up from the parking area below to the front door, you enter into the living room, with sofas and a library of books. To your right is the dining room, and to the left is the staircase up to the bedrooms. It was a little small, but we had no difficulty getting our luggage up (and Andrea was quickly on hand to help another guest with larger luggage).

Our room was the largest, on the top floor. It had a sort of vestibule, with closet hanging space and a shelf on the left, a shower bathroom on the right, and the beautiful room straight ahead. We had a comfy king sized bed below the exposed ceiling beams, a sofa, and a view out to the countryside. There was good lighting for reading in bed, on the sofa, and in the bathroom. I will point out that the ceiling is sloped here, so you need to be mindful at first.

We stayed six nights, and asked to have dinner any night they were cooking, which was a great idea! The first night we ate with Andrea and Barbara and a darling couple from Brazil. They served THE best simple pasta I have ever had, duck breast, panna cotta, and a selection of cheeses. Everything was carefully selected from small farms and vineyards (the proscuitto from a friend in Italy), with wonderful wines with each course! We ate another night with three other couples from Belgium and France, and shared stories over the meal in a mixture of French and English.

In warmer weather I’m sure we would have taken more advantage of the lawns and the little pigeonniere, a small house on the property set up with everything needed for eating al fresco (refrigerator, plates, cutlery, and a small table). We bought cheese, meat, fruit and bread for a picnic one warm afternoon.

It was just the most lovely place to spend time. Barbara and Andrea are gracious, gentle and thoughtful hosts, always looking for ways to make you more comfortable. Their home is a place for convivial conversations, quiet contemplation, and relaxation, in a beautiful setting. It’s one of our favorite places, ever.

Room Tip: Our room was the largest, on the top floor, and it was absolutely beautiful. If you are tall you nee...

We got lost and arrived past 8.30pm. Seeing that the nearby villages had no places where we could eat dinner, Andre and Barbara very kindly decided to cook up a beautiful meal for us. That's good service beyond the call of duty!

The rooms are clean and comfortable, and the views of the Dordogne Valley in the morning was just breathtakingly tranquil and picturesque. This place was a good springboard to explore the Dordogne Valley from.

Thanks for taking care of us so well, Andre and Barbara. We really enjoyed our stay.

Andreas and Barbara were gracious hosts. The B&B is a very old house with loads of charm. The queen bed was comfortable and the bathroom was modern with a good shower. The area is very quiet and rural; great location for exploring the perigord area. Wonderful French breakfasts - bread from a wood-fired oven was delicious, cheese, fresh fruit. They gave good recommendations on places to go that were of interest to us. I'd love to return.

It might be due to; the owners that truly cared that we have a wonderful experience and recommended trips with highest passion based on our liking; we had amazing organic, homemade, local produces for breakfast, and world class coffee; the absolutely beautiful remodeled house that turned our visit something quite unique - can't wait to return! Highly recommend this special place on earth!
