I am leaving a review for Isabelle even though I had to cancel the trip because of a serious illness. She agreed to refund all the monies paid even though by rights she could have retained the deposit. Looking at all the reviews it is a great place to stay. I hope to stay next year and of course thank her personally
Can't say enough nice things about Isabelle and her wonderful troglodyte cottage 2 blocks from the Montfort Castle in Vitrac, Dordogne. We originally set our stay for 12 days but, after our first day we extended it for another 2 days. First, the little Commune de Montfort in Vitrac is fabulous, surrounded by a beautiful rural setting complete with farms, cattle, chickens, and birds singing. Small village with good restaurants and excellent bakery, located within a block from the impressive castle.
Secondly, the location allows great short day trips to see so much the area has to offer. Our stay was perfect.
This charming house in the village of Montfort with it's out door deck over looking Chateau Montfort and the valley down to the Dordogne river was our ideal location to explore this beautiful area of France. It's location in the quiet village (except for the many visitors to the Chateau daily) was a welcome respite after a busy day of exploration. A glass of Sparkling or Rosé at days end with some appetizers to sit and watch the beautiful sunsets or the air balloons rise and fall over the distance hills and the twinkling lights of Dome appearing at dusk. The Romance of the house was supported by a fully equipped kitchen, a spacious living space, and a cozy bedroom. It was simply fun experiencing life in a troglodyte home, wondering about times past but at no time missing the modern amenities of life today because like I said the house is well equipped - including a nice BBQ for outdoor cooking.
It's location is ideal as Sarlat is only 10 minutes away by car as well as several other villages and historical sites along the Dordogne. There are 2 restaurants in the village (opening hours could be spotty during off season) and a Boulangerie a 2 minute walk on the other side of the village for fresh bread and croissants daily (closed Thursdays). There are many restaurant choices all around within a 15 minute car drive. Best for us was all the walking routes to explore the French country side at leisure - it is truly the land of walnuts, duck, and Foie Gras. A great spot to create many happy memories of a beautiful vacation in the Dordogne region. Thanks Isabelle for sharing your home with us. We hope to return someday.
