“What's bad with golf”

Montauk Downs State Park Golf Course
Attraction details
Reviewed 4 August 2015

Golf has been losing player for years now, its cost prohibitive, a round of 18 takes to long, its inherently hard to play and to punitive for missed/bad shots…and then there’s Montauk Downs State Park.
From the antiquated state run reservation system to the “No Refund” unaccommodating check-in staff, and the overwhelmed, flustered, not friendly starter, no wonder the state of golf is in trouble. These observations where all before play!
The course is in OK shape, tee boxes and greens are average. Please don't miss any shots, you will never find your ball.
WAY to expensive for out of state players, stay away!

Montauk is a beautiful course and is great value for the money, in or out of state. I used a rental set, and that too was quite good: a new set of Mizunos. Fairways were well kept, roughs were not nearly as penal as they are on Bethpage Black (or even red for that matter).

Great pro shop - lots of cool gear available for purchase. Locker room is pretty nice too.

Greens were in very rough shape. I'm not a golf course maintenance person - there probably wasn't a whole lot they could do with this winter, but it's a shame that greens don't hold up relative to the rest of the course.

I'm confused about the design - the driving range is between the 3rd and 4th holes, and it's a distraction on 3rd green and 4th tee.

6400 yards from the whites, just as tough from the Reds for ladies. Many 400 yd par 4s need to be played at 5s . Drive, lay up , on in 3 and putt for par. Make your pars on 3s and 5s. Beautiful course . Fully stocked pro shop. Serious golfers for a serious course. Greens took a beating this winter and right now are terrible , in an acne looking condition and impossible to putt if you must putt through the bad areas.....

If you enjoy a challenging course that is always in great shape, this course is for yourself.
Bargain greens fees. And the vistas on some of fhe holes are first rate. Cant wait to go back!

Weekday April morning, 7am, walked on. It was a little cool, but still... got to play alone, which I enjoy. Links layout gives you wide open spaces. Challenge comes from fairway lies, wind, and most of all, the green complexes which are bunkered like Sicily in WWII and provide consistently tricky putts. Only complaint is proximity of houses on the course perimeter, which seemed odd in a state park. Still, a fun course to walk and worth the $50 out-of-state I paid.
