“"A Rodriguan Gem!"”
Reviewed 5 December 2012

We have stayed in a lot of guesthouses and Kafe Marron ranks as one of the best. Although it has only four double rooms it is designed in such a way as to give the impression of space. This is complemented by a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and absence of formality; words like 'homely' and 'welcoming' are apt descriptions.

Our room was tastefully decorated with air conditioning and a spacious section of terrace. The meals have to be commended. Breakfast was served at 07.30 to 08.00 and consisted of seasonal fruit and omelette or fried eggs with fruit juice and coffee or tea and fresh bread. Guests ate at the same table which helped to break down barriers and afforded an opportunity for everyone to share their experiences of the island and elsewhere. A great idea! Dinner was at 19.30 and consisted of three courses, all of which Frederic would explain beforehand. The food was excellent, so much so that I had to ask Dorothy, the owner, to send me some Rodriguan recipes to try out at home (please don't forget Dorothy!).

Although the Kafe Marron doesn't have a swimming pool it is ideally located near Pointe Coton beach which is a couple of minutes walk away. For those who, like us, have to stay out of the sun, the beach is bordered by trees providing good shade. And if you want a break from the sea you can always catch the No 208 bus to Port Mathurin which is a 20 minutes ride away, and costs Rs 29 each way. Alternatively, Frederic can arrange to rent a car or scooter for you. There is also a nearby restaurant and hotel if you want a midday meal.

We loved our stay at Kafe Marron...and so will you! And book early!

We came to the Kafe Marron for three nights after spending some time on Mauritius and the contrast could not be more stark. Frederic and Dorothy were so hospitable and really made us feel like we could have/do anything we wanted. They arranged for us to rent a scooter for a very reasonable price and it was parked right outside the morning we wanted to use it. Despite the laid back nature of Rodrigues there was no shortage of things to do, with plenty of tour options to the outlying islands.

The food was incredible! In the morning it was a simple omelet with toast and juice, but the dinners were always quite extravagant, typically including four courses, usually with seafood, but there was a pretty wide variety. The location is also very nice. It is right across the road from the beach (watch out for sea urchins) and there are some really nice hikes in the area, I would recommend the Trou d’Argent. Overall, we wish we could have spent a little more time here!

Kafé Marron is a very nice place close to the best beaches on Rodrigues at the other end of the island from the airport. The house is pleasantly spacious and well thought out with quirky furnishings. Dorothy runs a casual place with an easy, friendly atmosphere. The food is excellent. Be prepared to meet cows, chickens roaming around the house and mingle in french at the dinner table.

No pool, but the beach and the Indian Ocean are 2 minutes away.

Recommended.

We have stayed at Kafe Marron 3 nights on our honeymoon and the whole experience was great. The guest house is perfctly located, near the best beaches in Rodrigues, and is very charming. Dorothy and Fredric are fantastic, they really help you plan your stay in Rodrigues (excursions, rent of the scooter, trasnfers etc.). The food is also excellent and the general atmosphere very pleasent. Highly suggested!

We stayed 5 nights at Kafe Marron and i could say this was definetely one of our best accomodations ever.
The house is new, very nicely furnished, the owner Dorothy and her family are very kind and attentive. We felt really at home there!
I have to mention also the food which Dorothy prepared for us - it was fantastic! Very tasty and also the table arrangement and the service were soooo good...!
Thank you again for these beautiful days.

We liked the accomodation and the island a lot and hope to come back again.
