We have stayed in a lot of guesthouses and Kafe Marron ranks as one of the best. Although it has only four double rooms it is designed in such a way as to give the impression of space. This is complemented by a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and absence of formality; words like 'homely' and 'welcoming' are apt descriptions.
Our room was tastefully decorated with air conditioning and a spacious section of terrace. The meals have to be commended. Breakfast was served at 07.30 to 08.00 and consisted of seasonal fruit and omelette or fried eggs with fruit juice and coffee or tea and fresh bread. Guests ate at the same table which helped to break down barriers and afforded an opportunity for everyone to share their experiences of the island and elsewhere. A great idea! Dinner was at 19.30 and consisted of three courses, all of which Frederic would explain beforehand. The food was excellent, so much so that I had to ask Dorothy, the owner, to send me some Rodriguan recipes to try out at home (please don't forget Dorothy!).
Although the Kafe Marron doesn't have a swimming pool it is ideally located near Pointe Coton beach which is a couple of minutes walk away. For those who, like us, have to stay out of the sun, the beach is bordered by trees providing good shade. And if you want a break from the sea you can always catch the No 208 bus to Port Mathurin which is a 20 minutes ride away, and costs Rs 29 each way. Alternatively, Frederic can arrange to rent a car or scooter for you. There is also a nearby restaurant and hotel if you want a midday meal.
We loved our stay at Kafe Marron...and so will you! And book early!
