The Clocktower Restaurant is a very comfortable, serviced by very good staff and has an excellent menu of dishes, which include many ingredients grown in the Kitchen Garden within the hotel grounds. The food really is delicious.

We ate here twice in the last week; dinner as non-residents and breakfast as residents. In between time we had really good food in the Conference Centre. Does this have a separate chef?

DINNER. We were in a party for a wedding the following day. They couldn't even accommodate us around a single table. To compound this, their waiting at the three tables got so far out of synch, one had received dessert before the other had received main courses. Most of us opted for the burger, which was dry and difficult to eat due to the lack of moisture: you can only pout so much relish on a burger. Some of the other food was pretentious. The coffee was awful, but complaining about it brought the highlight of the evening : the hand-made chocolates.

BREAKFAST. The morning after the wedding, guests were invited to share breakfast with the newly-weds. Unfortunately, some of the staff didn't appear to know and directed several families to other tables in the restaurant. How to start off badly... They ran out of bowls at least twice, small plates once and large plates for hot food at least once. Top tip for coffee : either order something that comes from the espresso machine or only order small cafetieres. We think they use the same amount of coffee for any size. For a supposedly top-notch hotel, the choice of continental breakfast was VERY poor: brown bread, white bread (so dry it really was only good for toasting), cold croissants and pains au chocolate. And the toaster was on extra "wimp" setting, according to my dad! Four types of cereal doesn't hack it either. We stayed in a Premier Inn the night before and had the same choice of cereals, bread and fruit. The fruit selection would be bettered in almost any 3 star hotel in the USA or Continental Europe: orange & pink grapefruit segments and two types of melon.

We witnessed at least one animated discussion between staff and the whole thing just appeared to have an air of disorganisation about it. It was as if they had never served breakfast on a Sunday morning when every guest comes late.

What is truly shocking is the comparison between the two meals in Clocktower and the wedding function we attended in the Conference Centre between them. There we had good, tempting and edible food delivered with no fuss (no "who order the fish?") in a timely manner. Time for a takeover of the Clocktower by the functions department.

Called here mid week for a champagne afternoon tea-what a delight the food and the service were impeccable - what gorgeous soft sandwiches - plus an array cakes plus Scones with Jam & cream - we loved the setting- weather wasn’t up to sitting on the terrace but we had a good walk art& will definitely return for both the Spa as well as a Food & Flicks evening - highly recommend

We stayed at the hotel on the sleeping beauty package but found the food lacking. We went expecting amazing things due to the other reviews and the fact is has 2 AA Rosettes but it fell very short.
The soup, pea and mint, was the best of all three courses by far. Simply beautiful and the hidden little tortellini at the bottom was a delight.
I had the burger for the main and my partner, the cod. Both were average and in fact I have had much better burgers from establishments without such accolade.
The pudding, cheesecake, was lovely. Its textures and tastes were a nice surprise to the palette.
Overall we were left feeling very underwhelmed. Perhaps our expectations were set too high. We had recently been to the Sofitel in London and with only 1 AA Rosette it blew us away. Outstanding food. So we thought the Clocktower with two would be even better or at the very least it would be as good. Unfortunately it wasn't. Also we were offered water for the table and coffee at the end of the meal. The prices were extortionate; £5 for the water and £10 for the coffee! No matter the establishment there should be a limit to what you can charge for such basics. Left a bitter taste in our mouths when we saw the bill and made us paranoid as to what the price may be for any 'additionals' at breakfast the next morning.
I must say however that the staff were lovely. We were welcomed by a cheerful hostess who wished me a happy birthday. The fact that this had been passed onto her by reception was a lovely touch. Made the welcome more personnel. Our waiters were friendly and we had a laugh with them. However as the night went on we did feel a little forgotten about. We had to get up to go find someone in the end in order to sign for our meal and leave. If we visit again I think we would either only come for the spa or may simply try Horto instead.

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to write your review.

It was such a delight for our team to read that you found the team lovely, receiving the personal touch from each member of the team, from the welcoming Happy Birthday wishes, to the friendliness of the waiting staff.

However, we are so sorry to read that we didn't get some things quite right for you during your dining experience and please accept our sincere apologies. Please be assured that guest feedback is extremely important to us, highlighting areas in which we can improve the service we offer to our guests and your comments will be discussed in detail at our weekly management meeting. We are also sorry to read that you thought our prices were high, for which we can only apologise, we do compare our prices with local hotels of the same standard and have found them to be competitively priced in comparison.

We hope you will return to Rudding Park again very soon, whether it be relaxing on a wonderful Spa day or to try our Horto restaurant, where in addition to the A La Carte menu, we also have a tasting menu to delight your taste buds, of which may be more to your overall preference for dining.

Once again, thank you for your comments.

Kindest Regards
The Rudding Park Team
