We stayed at the Namib Desert Lodge near Sesriem for 3-nights in early Oct ($193/night). The lodge, which caters largely to tour operators, was 5 km off the rough dirt road 60 km from Sesriem. It consisted of a large central building housing the lobby, gift shop, and a bar and large restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. Behind was a nicely landscaped area and 2 moderate-sized, well-maintained pools with plenty of loungers. There were a few rooms by the pools, but most were in a long series of quadruplexes that swept away to the right of the main building; each had views either of the red rock ridge behind the lodge or long views across the desert to the distant mountains beyond the road.

Our room, which faced the bluff, had a nice patio with chairs in front and a moderate-sized bedroom with twin beds (all of the rooms had twins) with trunks at the foot, side tables, a small desk and an armoire. There was a safe and AC, but no fan or mini-fridge. The bathroom was also moderate-sized but dated and simply furnished, although the shower had been updated with a new door. In general, the room (like much of the lodge) had a tired and well-used feel, with rudimentary finishing and scuffed and dated furnishings. Perhaps management has become complacent, knowing that tour groups will continue to fill the lodge regardless of whether resources are spent on maintenance and updating? They seemed to be relying on the chain's brand name without paying attention to the details for which the chain in known.

The included breakfast was good, with an egg station, bacon and a selection of pretty much everything you would want. Because the lodge did not offer a half-board package despite being the only place to eat for kilometres around, dinner entailed an extra charge. Served buffet-style, it was mediocre and expensive: dinner for 2 with a drink cost N800, compared to dinner with 2 drinks each at the fabulous Joe's Beer House in Windhoek for N460 – a substantial premium even when when transportation costs are considered.

We had a couple of other issues with the lodge: while free parking was provided, it was far from the rooms and, if you were at the end like we were, entailed quite a hike with luggage; and internet was available only in the lobby where only 6-8 seats were available, totally inadequate for a lodge of this size.

As a peripheral comment, the roads in this area were poorly maintained and were chewed up by the heavy tourist traffic of buses, 4x4's, and huge excursion vehicles, resulting in long sections (50-100 km) of washboard that only similar vehicles could take at any speed (a contrast to the D-series highways through the mountains from the interior that had little tourist traffic and were a delight to travel). For long sections from NW of Solitaire to Sesriem, our rental sedan could only manage maximum speeds of 20-40 kmh of bone jarring travel, resulting in very long and unpleasant travel days. Avoid renting cars for this area, or be aware that the short distance from the lodge to the Namib-Naukluft National Park does not mean short or pleasant travel.

In summary, the Namib Desert Lodge does not deliver sufficient value to justify the price charged. While the common areas were nicely maintained, the rooms were tired and worn, the dinners overpriced and mediocre and, for us, the proximity to the park negated by the quality of the roads. If I were to return, I would book earlier (the lodge was the only option left when I booked a year in advance) and find a lodge closer to the park.

Enjoyable stay,,staff were friendly and helpful when I needed information on the area. Would recommend the lodge as a stay over if visiting Soussuvlei area. We didn't see a lot of wild life except a few Oryxs' on odd occasions but we were there to see the red dunes.

We stayed for 2 days at Namib Desert Lodge and found it awesome for its location, completely framed on the scenery, with wild animals around we could watch from the rooms, and for its wonderful gardens and Oasis-like style in the middle of the desert. Nice swimming pools too, hidden in the middle of luxuriant tropical gardens. Rooms are nice african style, very clean. Restaurant very stylish and cozy and reception too.
Buffet breakfast and dinner are superb, very good choice and quality.
Really did enjoy the lodge and recommend it to friends and travelers.

Lovely location with nice brief walks close to the lodge. Adjacent to the lodge is a beautiful "fossilised" dune viewed from our chalet. The lodge is about an hour-and-a-half 's drive from Sossusvlei through awesome desert countryside with spectacular rock formations and mountains, before arriving at the equally spectacular mountainous red dunes approaching Sossusvlei.
