Anniversary visit. Nice and unique, but stay was loud overnight and not very restful.

Review of Belhurst Castle
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 weeks agovia mobile
We stayed in the Bamboo room for our anniversary. It was nice, clean and spacious. The bed creaked every time you moved or shifted, so it wasn't the most comfortable. The castle was loud. Every door that opened we could hear, even could hear people coughing on our floor all night. (Which it was a sunday-monday night, so wasn't even busy.) The room also didn't have room darkening shades and the top of the door had a sky light that shone the hall lights all night. Dinner was nice but pricey at Edgar's. Breakfast was bagels, oatmeal, yogurt. I enjoyed taking it out to a bench near the lake. Grounds are pretty and the lake is beautiful. Wine spigot on 1st floor had TONS of fruit flies in it. Wish there was a "castle tour".

We paid big money to stay in the tower room. There was a dirty ring around the inside of the soaking tub. The person at the front desk was unapologetic and defensive when we raised our concern. She told us that there was no problem (completely disregarding our complaint) because the rooms are inspected after cleaning.
I suppose the person that inspected the cleanliness of the tub also inspected the dead bugs on the window sills, filthy windows, nonfunctional TV, random piece of plastic stuck to the wall and the broken curtain rod.

My wife and our friends decided to have dinner at Belhurst Caste, on our final night of our vacation to Newport and the Finger Lakes area. There were four of us for dinner.
When we called to make a reservation they said it was full, but if anything opened up, we would get a call back.
Within 24 hrs, we received a telephone call confirming our reservation for dinner.

We arrived early to have drinks on the patio prior to dinner and enjoy what we thought would be an epicurean evening in a beautiful environment.
Boy were we soon disappointed. The bar opening onto the patio, was obviously short staffed and it took lots of time for us to be even acknowledged never mind seated. Once we were on the patio, I have to say that our waitress was excellent , efficient and had a very quick sense of humour.

It was in the patio that I first noticed that something looked amiss. On looking at the castle windows from the patio, there was large cobwebs hanging on them, obviously more than a few days old. There were cobwebs, on all of the bushes , which showed a lack of maintenance on the part of the management.

We then went into dinner. Expecting the restaurant to be full, since we had to wait back for a confirmation, we were totally surprised to find that there were only four couples in a sun room of the main dining room, The rest of the rooms were empty. Where were all the diners. The lighting in the sun room was so bright, that we felt we were in a cafeteria at some factory.

Our waitress came to our table after 7 minutes and asked if we wanted water. We said we did and also ordered a bottle of wine and then looked over the menu. By this time the four of us were getting extremely concerned not only about the service, but also what would the food be like. We therefore decided to order a light appetizer and the Roast Beef for dinner with trimmings.

My goodness they could not even do that correctly. The first time they brought the plates of food, they did not know what we had ordered and came out with Roast Beef cooked medium - well when we had asked for medium rare and rare, they brought the plates back and we then waited.
About ten minutes later the plates returned with all of the roast beef cooked well done.
We decided just to eat it and get out of there as quickly as possible.

I would not recommend this Hotel/restaurant to anybody.

Room tip: Yes, Do not stay at this hotel or eat there. Not worth the money and the time.

We ate at Edgar’s Restaurant in the castle. The food is fantastic and our waiter Brandon was remarkable. Not only did he cater to our every need he also encouraged us to relax and enjoy our time at the castle. He was such a gracious host not only giving us the history of the castle but his hospitality was second to none. If you’re ever there try to request him you won’t be disappointed.

We were greeted at the host station with a “coming through!” Then told it would be an hour for food. After being seated waited 15 mins for water. We just left to never return. Parking lot was empty. Maybe the food was worth the rude service. We will never know….

Belhurst knows how to go above and beyond with service. We were a group of 12 friends that gather together each year to remember our friend that has passed. This year we all gathered at Belhurst and what a great choice. There are many that made our trip so special:

Stonecutters: Becky made sure that 3 of our friends that had a late arrival were able to get something to eat. This made the start for them so much better. Thank you Becky you know how to make someone feel special.

Kristine at the castle wine tasting took the time to learn about our group and put together a fabulous tasting - keeping in mind all the different tastes. Her intern did a great job pouring and explaining the wines and cheeses. Thank you Kristine.

Ava at Edgar’s provided our group with space for us to gather on our final night. Thank you Ava.

The castle is a unique place to stay. We would highly recommend it. Thank you to everyone who made this year’s trip so special.
