We stayed over the weekend. We had requested upon booking late check-out since the hotel was virtually empty, reception originally told us "it is fine, nobody is here tonight". Then called us to invent a story that was obviously made up in order to cancel that - they got angry when I pointed out the obvious contradictions in their story. To top it off, we forgot an expensive item in the room, when we called about it the response was "oh yeah, we found it, but threw it away"...so they are at best unprofessional, at worst made it "disappear"...other downside: half the rooms are on the main road so there is constant traffic noise. For more than $500 per night (that is without tax, on off-season), treat yourself to something better. I have stayed in hundreds of hotels in over 70 countries, the price to service ratio has to be amongst the worst - if not the worst.

The Baker House and its Carriage House is defined as a bed and breakfast guest house, but quirky, superior and totally beyond expectations. The rooms were modernised, spacious and all had huge bathrooms. Both houses had large fireplaces which had been upgraded to use instant light logs which kept the lounge areas cosy. In each lounge was provided with free coffee on tap plus a bar which worked on an honesty basis. guests had to fill in a slip with their drinks and pass it to reception. Breakfast was served in the dining room in the main house with a wide choice to suit all tastes. The hot breakfast menu was different each day. There was a choice of cereals with berries, mixed fruit salad, yoghurts, fresh fruit, croissants and side orders of English style muffins, toast and bacon. Cooked dishes ranged from scrambled eggs to blueberry pancakes and French toast.
In spite of its modest title as a guest house, there was a spa pool with massages and facials on offer. This place packs a real punch for warmth and a genuine Long Island experience.

Room Tip: The property is away from the main road, therefore there are no traffic problems. this was winter and Long Island is quiet then.

This is a charming, historic home, but the rooms in the front have highway noise all night long. The rooms overlooking the back garden are much quieter.

The 200-year-old wisteria, the tiger lilies hanging over the pool, and the grounds in general are gorgeous. They have so many beautiful coffee table books both in the main living room and the guest rooms that were a pleasure to read through in the evening.

Secluded Tudor home on Main Street. Large, modern rooms. Privacy in the rear cottage. Lovely breakfasts; comfortable common rooms. Pricey but it is the Hamptons. You can take wine and liquor as you wish- on the honor system. Thus you feel at home away from home.
It's not super cushy in terms of service but fine for a short retreat

We decided to spend the night at The Baker House 1650 for our first wedding anniversary. What a great decision we made. Every square inch of this historic residence is impeccably designed and beautifully furnished. It's décor is only surpassed by the magnificent service we received.

Shortly after arriving we were shown to the spa on the lower floor. Candles were lit, appropriate music was playing, and the pool was set to a comfortable bath temperature. For 2 hours we had the entire facility to ourselves. Under lock and key, curtains drawn, it was a magical time.

After going out to dinner that evening, we came back to the Baker House and indulged in our wedding cake that was stored in our freezer at home for one year. (An odd tradition, as the cake surely was better the day after the wedding.) The staff were great hosts in allowing us to keep the cake in their kitchen until we were ready to partake.

In the morning, a delicious breakfast of blueberry pancakes and huevos rancheros awaited us. Coffee, tea, fresh juices and pastries were also part of the fare.

All in all, a wonderful time at a wonderful location.

On the negative, while it was completely out of their control, the weather this winter has been horrible. As a result, clumpy blocks of ice scattered the stone driveway, and the grounds were impassable. The walk from the house to the parking area was quite treacherous, especially at night because there is not adequate driveway lighting. It's too dark.

Also, the pillows and linens on the bed are fantastic, of the highest quality. However, we believed the mattress to be a bit too firm.

But certainly do not let these two slight negatives stop you from staying at The Baker House. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: The Gardiner Room is very spacious
