Owner description: Formed in 1923 by Lucy Harwood and several members of the Taos Society of Artists, the Harwood Museum of Art is the second oldest museum in New Mexico. The museum has been affiliated with the University of New Mexico since 1935, and it now boasts the internationally acclaimed Agnes Martin Gallery, galleries exhibiting highlights from the museum's collection of work by the Taos Society of Artists, Taos Moderns, Hispanic Traditions, and contemporary artists working in Taos, and changing exhibitions fulfilling the Harwood's vision to "Bring Taos Arts to the World and World Arts to Taos."

The Harwood holds historic and contemporary Anglo and Hispanic art and has recently built a beautiful small auditorium for musical performances. The Taos Chamber Music group hosts visiting musicians and puts on fine presentations.

Thanks very much for your comments. We're very proud that the Taos Chamber Music Group has served as resident chamber music group at the Harwood Museum of Art for over a decade. It's a world-class group, and we're very happy that - with the new Arthur Bell Auditorium - they have a beautiful space in which to perform.

This museum is a wonderful tribute to the founders of the art community in Taos. Photographs of the students from the Black Mountain Institute of North Carolina and some of their art are highlighted .

Thanks so much for your comments. Indeed, Taos Society of Artists members Victor Higgins and Bert Phillips were among the founders of the Harwood in 1923. Their spirit very much pervades the Harwood today.

A trip to Taos is not complete without a visit to this museum. The collection is diverse and presents the early Taos art scene as well as more current works (Rauschenberg). Don't miss the video of the Black Mountain influence on the region.

We're so glad that you enjoyed your visit. The Harwood's roots are entwined with those of the Taos Society of Artists, and we're proud to celebrate both the past the present art colony of Taos.

My fiance and I were in Taos to be married. This coincided with the "Lighting of Ledoux Street," an annual event before Christmas with hundreds of farolitos/luminarias along the block, warm campfires outside the galleries and museums, hot cider, homemade cookies, coffee, and spiced wine. The Harwood had great cookies and Santa was there! Also, special discounts for the evening in their small but charming gift shop. The museum has great paintings and sculpture, much by local Taos artists, and is well-worth a visit.

The Agnes Martin Gallery alone is worth a pilgrimage. I recommend staying in the gallery for a long time, watching, thinking, imagining.
