The name didn't tempt me, the location is not very inviting, but the restaurant is surprisingly good. The food is fresh, adeptly prepared (not typical Mexican, but Latin/French), and served in a casual, pleasing way. Well-known for its breakfast menu, but its tapas and sandwiches are terrific, too.

My wife and I arrived in Taos mid-morning after a drive up from Santa Fe. We hadn't visited Taos for many years, so we stopped at the Information Center at the south edge of town. Among our questions was, "Any suggestions for breakfast." "Absolutely" was the quick answer from the woman at the desk, who named Gutiz and marked it on a map. "Try their French Toast" came from another woman working there who overheard. They then came up with a couple of alternative recommendations, but we headed to the north edge of town, where we found Gutiz in a rather unimpressive building that uninformed tourists would likely pass by. Outside, a small sign said "Gutiz -- Breakfast, lunch, and chocolate." Their web site describes their food as "Latin French Fusion. "Our sense was that it was a local crowd. It was fairly busy, but we were seated immediately. In any case the French Toast was perhaps the best we've ever had...sweet breads with plenty of fresh strawberries, bananas, and maple syrup. And, from the looks of the savory dishes on the plates of other patrons, those were outstanding, too.

My wife would rate it 4 star but the other 3 of us really loved it. Innovative options for sweet or savory breakfast, excellent beverages, great service. Best meal I had in Taos! Don't fail to try it!

Gutiz is a special restaurant. Most breakfasts come with a side salad, a feature I really enjoy. The basics are outstanding. The breakfast bowls are really worth trying. Coffee is very good. Pastries excellent. Waitstaff outstanding, knowledgeable, warm and efficient. Lots of nice side attractions. Can be a truly great breakfast experience.
