“Fantastic in every way!”
Reviewed 24 March 2012

My partner and my parents have just returned (today) from two excellent weeks in South Africa, culminating in four nights at Shamwari as the anticipated highlight feature of the trip. It didn't disappoint! We opted to stay at the Bayethe Lodge on the basis it was not a 'traditional' hotel type room and felt a little more 'safari' - our tented rooms were brilliant, with no shortage of luxury provisions and considerations. We had a warthog sleep outside our lodge on our first night, with my parents having three 'deer' sleep outside theirs the following night! Food quality, wine variety and service were all excellent. The game drives, under the magnificent guidance of Headman, were superb - I never imagined we would get so close to such a variety of animals, including lions, rhinos and a truly incredible encounter with a herd of elephants and their matriach. This isn't a cheap location to stay at, but it delivered in every way for us and was worth every single penny to come away with magical memories that will last a lifetime - I would go back tomorrow!

Room Tip: Take warm clothes and hats for the early morning starts in the open game vehicles!

It's a long drive along a rutted dusty track, through a number of security gates, and at times you wonder if you're going to ever get there, but when you do there's a chilled (non-alcoholic) glass of something nice while you check in. But it's ok, because the mini-bar is well stocked and there's an excellent wine list.
Lunch is had overlooking the water hole, with all sorts of cute animals (including warthogs which are surprisingly ugly-cute) ambling by.
We had tent 1 - tent... I say tent, but our 'tent' had a wooden floor, thatched roof, a victorian roll top bath and our own private plunge pool. Shamwari is about luxury and style and does it well.
And then there's the game drives! OK, so getting up at 5am is not much fun but so worth it. Thanks to the skill of our excellent, if slightly mad, ranger Jacques we saw every flavour of antelope you could ask for, rhino (black AND white), giraffe, elephants, zebra, lions - mum, dad and babies - cheetah and a leopard.
Grab a nap after breakfast, then another one after lunch and you're set up for the evening game drive along with sundowners and awesome sunsets. You will need to wrap up warm as it's very cold first thing in the morning and last thing at night on the game drives.
Don't forget binoculars, although you can hire them, and take your best camera.
There's no wi-fi and just a single PC in reception that connects via a 3G dongle, so you'll be relying on whatever brand of smartphone you have most of the time.

Room Tip: Not a room tip, but if anyone says 'and your ranger is Jacques' then you are in for an excel...

We stayed for 3 nights at the Shamwari Long Lee Manor in late January. Everything was just unbelievable. Our room was modern and very comfortable close to the nearest pool. The food was excellent, our Ranger , Shaun, was superb and the close up views of the animals just mind blowing. We were very fortunate to be joined by a very friendly South Africa family who made us most welcome and loved to hear about English football. This was the last stop on our holiday and certainly was the highlight. Many thanks to the Shamwari team.

Room Tip: Stay in the rooms apart from the main house.

We stayed two nights in Eagles Crag. The first night there were only six of us.The service was excellent and the room was just wonderful. Two days and four Safaris was more than enough for me and although this was the most expensive two nights of my life, it was outstanding and will never be forgotten

Although we are a couple, no children, we stayed in the lodge which is favoured by families - Riverdene. We were lucky all the families which were here at the same time were delightful! (not a problem child among them). Very comfortable rooms, probably of a four and a half star rating, excellent food and service, but the star of the show is the safari itself. Twice a day, dawn and dusk, we went with a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable ranger, Matthew, who communicated his love of the animals to us. We saw every animal we could have hoped to see there - some of them up very close indeed!
