Shindzela Tented Camp
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 4 October 2017

Having spent 8 nights of mobile tented camping in Botswana (which was fantastic), Shindzela was a welcome accommodation! The atmosphere of the camp was friendly, casual, and all of the staff were very attentive. Enjoyed sitting on the front porch of our tent, and the capability of having wifi at our tent was an added bonus! Food was plentiful and very good! Our guide Johan was excellent, and did his very best, with the help of tracker Geoffrey, to find us the best in animal sighting. A lovely camp and great bush experience!

Room Tip: There are only 8 (I think) tents, and none has a better view than another, though a few may have a b...

We dropped into Shindzela Tented Camp as part of an overland African Safari.

The camp was fantastic, with great accommodation and food.

The game drives were not commercial, unlike others we went on and this really added to the experience. The guides were so passionate and knowledgeable and we saw a great range of animals, including many rhino, which we didn't see in many other locations.

Whilst the rooms were tented, it felt 3 star at least. The staff were very attentive and the food was excellent.

I would recommend this camp to anybody wanting a non-commercial experience in an amazing location.

We stayed in 4 different camps in Greater Kruger and this was by far the best. Rangers Ralph and Jaco were knowledgeable, funny, accommodating and kind. Tracker Raymond was the real deal. We saw extraordinary things on our safari drives- wild dogs, 7 rhinos at one time and the water buffalo wandering into camp.
The tents were comfortable and the bathroom fine. Just what you'd need to be comfortable and still know you're in the bush. Breakfast was the best of any place we stayed cause everything was cooked to order. The staff went out of their way to accommodate special dietary needs and the soups that were dinner starters got rave reviews.
The waterhole behind the camp attracted everything from impala to elephants. Spent a lovely morning watching giraffes come there to drink.
We stayed in fancier places but this is the one I'd come back to.

When on safari, you must stay at a tented camp to get the full bush experience!

The only down side to staying here is that every guest must be escorted to and from your tent to have a meal at the main area since you're the middle of nowhere with wildlife. At night you could hear all types of wildlife around the tent! Super exciting! Game drive was great... Saw lots of game. Ranger was very passionate about his job and knowledgeable.

Food was good considering the very remote location. What really shocked me was the fact that all tents had free WIFI! Imagine this, tents in the middle of the bush with free internet. The drive was long to get to the tents but well worth it. Definitely a great bush experience by far.

nice location and very well run camp. Hardcore game drives with very good rangers, good food and they really made an effort to accommodate us, which is tough when your running a small lodge in the middle of nowhere; every traveler is different, so a few bumps do to management changing the schedule, worked out in the end. They try and make it 'homey' which is nice, but having the rangers serve your drinks is a bit embarrassing.

Doubt you'll find a better value in the area. It's a real, unfenced camp - we caught a hyena trying to sneak up on us while eating dinner.

Biggest problem was that the drought seemed to have devastated the reserve - we saw 10X the game in a couple hours driving on paved roads in Kruger.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Shindzela is an authentic tented bush camp situated in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, greater Kruger National Park. The camp accommodates a maximum of 16 guests and is unfenced, making it very much part of the wilderness. Shindzela is not built by an award winning architect, nor is it furnished by an interior designer. What you will find though, is a comfy bed, freshly laundered linen, and décor from local crafters and artists. Shindzela is a comfortable/rustic tented bush camp, where you can relax, enjoy our warm hospitality and immerse yourself in the African wilderness. We love our informal, relaxed atmosphere. Each safari tent is built on wooden decks, and has their own en-suite shower/toilet and hand basin. The camp also has a swimming pool and overlooks our little watering hole, from where you can watch animals come down to drink. ... more   less
