Tremisana Game Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 31 July 2017

My partner and I stayed here in June (18th-22nd) on the 4 night Tremisana lodge itinerary. We have been many places and this was honestly an experience we were sad to leave- in short, we will be back.

Pick up from Jo'burg-
Our driver, George, was timely when we arrived at the airport. The drive was very long and If I could afford to next time I would opt to fly to Kruger directly just because the drive is made longer by several stops and it is very tiring. However, in the grand scheme of things this is minor and we made some great friends on the journey.

The lodge-
While basic, it has everything you need and we loved the rustic style of the rooms. The mosquito nets on the beds truly did their job and we had no issues with insects our entire stay. We were supplied with breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday. We cannot complain about the food, we very much enjoyed it and the staff could not do enough, even down to keeping the monkeys away during breakfast, which was quite amusing. The breakfast area was my personal favourite, as there was a waterhole right outside bringing all sorts of wildlife. Outside of meal times it was lovely to sit here and watch the day go by. Drinks purchased outside of this time were very well priced- we got more than our moneys worth. Of an evening there was a sort of lounge you could relax in, the staff often joined you and this added a personal touch as we could sit there exchanging stories of the days encounters. There is no evening entertainment, but with the early mornings and busy days we often turned in early. On the evening that you arrive you have dinner in the bush, this is quite exciting, especially as there were hyenas sitting near by!

The safari itself-
Viva safaris are affordable but personal. While the pricier safaris offer more luxury they appeared to be more packed and more commercialised. With all the itineraries offered by Viva Safaris, and the time of year, there were usually very few people on our game drives. The people on our game drive were the same age range as us, including our guide- Ed- and so this made the whole experience amazing. It was like being on safari with a very informative mate who had lots of interesting stories (not just someone who pointed at animals when he saw them!). We loved it. On the same note, massive thanks to Ed who made the entire trip and always went beyond for what we wanted. Sometimes it took a while before we spotted animals, but Ed was persistent and very knowledgeable, so we always found what we were looking for in the end and it was always worth it. By the end of our trip we managed to see 4 of the big 5 (we did not find a leopard but we did see one in the rehab centre) and lots of other amazing animals.

The only day we found rather tiring was the day trip to the main Kruger reserve. We found it to be a VERY long day, with a lot of traffic compared to being on the smaller game reserves. However, the animals are dense there so it is worth it.

The staff-
I have mentioned before how good the staff are, but this must be highlighted. They are truly amazing and make you feel welcome from start to finish. If you have an issue it is sorted immediately. They are passionate about what they do and this shows through their hospitality and expertise.

Thank you for everything! :)

Room Tip: Ask for a room near the breakfast area overlooking the waterhole- always wildlife to be seen!

We only had one night at Tremisana, but what a nice stay it was. We were greeted by Monkeys and a very comfortable room. Our evening Bush Drive included a wonderful BBQ out under an amazing blanket of stars where we were visited by Hyenas at the end of the meal. Our bush walk in the morning brought us to the Hippos. Followed by breakfast where we were visited by a family of Warthogs. Our two driving "safari" delivered Lions, Elephants, Warthogs, Impala, Nyala, Giraffes, and Zebras too. A great introduction to what we will see in Kruger.

Room Tip: We were in "Hut" ten, really a room in a larger hut. If the water tank is too full, you m...

Hi Richard

Thanks for a great review !

We are pleased that you enjoyed your room and the welcoming monkey committee.
The Bush BBQ is quite something and the Hyena are really turning this experience into something very special.....

Sounds like you were very lucky on the drives at Tremisana - Lions and Elephants and general game all add to the wildlife experience.

Kind regards

Piero

Me and my husband arrived in south africa 18th july 2017 for the 6 day treehouse/lodge safari trip and we were picked up by viva safari right outside the airport and were dropped off at tremisana. The grounds are absolutely stunning. The staff are so friendly. We was greeted by pretty who was very helpful and friendly (she always had a smile for everyone) our highlight of the trip was the morning bush walk with Ed and Raymond, we learnt so much from them and we even got close to a giraffe and some hippo's. I couldn't recommend this place enough (the beds are so comfy, after 20 hours of travelling this was like paradise) the room was absolutely perfect and the braii by the boma was one of our highlights. Thank you so much for everything.

We were part of the Viva safaris tour so had our first night here. It was brilliant. Dinner under the stars and the night safari were magical and a real bucket list moment. The monkeys were hilarious. Make sure you do the walking safari no matter what! It was incredible! I need to get more bush chocolate. Hal a lah! ;-) (that's an in-joke, you'll have to stay there to get it!)

Or family of 4, our sons are 18 and 22, loved out time here and with viva safaris. We chose the 4 day package with marcs treehouse too. It is a long drive from Johannesburg but we were ready for that. We had a family room here and it was small but adequate for our short visit. We loved the experience, with lovely grounds, good mosquito nets and a good shower. The whole trip was exactly as advertised and the walk we had with Rex and Raymond was a real highlight. Our game drives with Shannon were perfect and her passion for what she does was infectious. The boma dinner on the first night was a treat with honey badgers trying to share our food and the food back at the lodge was also nice. They have a small honesty bar with drinks the same sort of price as Johannesburg. Bear in mind that tips are expected for all the staff so have some currency ready after each activity. Would highly recommend viva safaris and this package. Ps. Look out for a visit from Flash the resident squirrel

Hi Lynn

I have read your review and also " Loved it".

We are pleased that your experience with Viva Safaris " was exactly as advertised" and that you so enjoyed the Bush Walk with Rex and Raymond. Viva is fortunate to have such talented and experienced rangers !

We are also thrilled that you enjoyed our young intern, Shannon. Despite her youth, she more than makes up with enthusiasm which I am pleased to read was "infectious".

The honey badgers at Marula Boma are becoming quite famous !

Thanks for your recommendation.

Kind regards

Piero
