Mimpi Resort Tulamben
Ranked #8 of 12 Hotels in Tulamben
Certificate of Excellence

I and a group of friends recently went to Tulamben in order to get our PADI open water diving certificates. It is a great place to do this as the currents are light and the diving is very enjoyable - with the nearby wreck being the highlight. Because my partner did not want to dive, our diving school booked us in to the Mimpi Resort and it was a good choice. The rooms were perfectly comfortable and the outdoor bathrooms spacious. The highlight of the resort is the beachfront restaurant and pool area which is attractive and relaxing. So, even if you are not diving, it is a perfectly nice place to while away the hours with a book.

Compared to other resorts in Bali I would struggle to give the resort a rating above 3 stars - but Tulamben is not as polished as many other resort towns (part of its charm). In Tulamben, food is only average, cold showers the norm, not much to do except dive - but if you do want to dive here (and it is well worth while) the hotel grounds and amenities seemed better than most nearby (which was confirmed by speaking with others who had stayed elsewhere as well).

Room Tip: The sea front deluxe rooms look the best

My stay here was with a group of family members - 6 people in total, spread over three Deluxe Cottages, two with connecting compounds. We stayed for 4 days/3 nights. We were all there to dive the Tulamben Wreck and surrounding dive spots.

The general impression was truly that of DELUXE, where the 'rooms' were not secluded but very private with its own compound, and even outdoor day bed. The rooms were generously sized with air-conditioning, tv, and phone. An outdoor ensuite with an open air shower area brought a very 'natural' feel to the whole ambience. With all our dive equipment there was still ample space about the room which was great. These Deluxe Cottages also had a loft of some description although that isn't used much as it is quite difficult to climb up to even with the provided ladder, is quite warm (hot air rises) and stuffy despite the air-conditioning. Its best seen as a 'void' and ignored as it is not part of any advertisement the resort puts out.

We stayed at Mimpi Resort but were diving with an external company. All the same, Within Mimpi Resort itself is a small dive centre that caters to local diving and snorkeling groups. No IDC Centre by far but is convenient for those who wanted to dive or snorkel impromptu.

Tulamben Wreck shore dive venue was only a short walk away from this Resort. We walked to and from there a couple of times when our dive operator were late to pick us up. We could easily walk via the beach or via the main roads both providing a different landscape; scenery, or shops - whichever you preferred.

Although all good, Mimpi Resort seem to also suffer from a deluge of mosquito so come prepared with personal repellant and other means of anti-insect you prefer. Mosquito coils are provided in the rooms with matches and candles. They all came to good use and kept the mosquitoes at bay if you get them going early enough. Still, use personal repellants liberally while walking around within the hotel or surrounds (shops included) to ensure you don't suffer bites.

The resort has an excellent restaurant that serves both local and western food. At the restaurant you get free wifi coverage. The restaurant is right next to the 2.5m deep rectangular pool which allows you to lounge with drinks and check emails! You can also get massages from local masseuses at the beachside, not too far from the pool. These masseuses charge in Rph for hourly service.

A short stroll towards the front gate and out of the Resort's compound, you will find a variety of shops, dive offices, restaurants, and drinking holes. You can expect to buy a wide variety of products from these shops including sodas, snacks, cigarettes, souvenirs, etc. as they pepper the streets all the way to the Tulamben Wreck site. Along this main roadway, you can also find other options and alternatives to the Resort's already great restaurant which can prove cheaper and with more variety. Some of these restaurants provide free wifi to patrons so you can still be 'in touch'.

All in all, our stay at Mimpi Resort was excellent, bar the mosquito issue. But that problem seems inherent wherever you go so be aware. The food was good, reasonably priced (even when compared to local fare) and service was provided promptly, with a smile almost all the time. Restaurant hours are until 1030pm afterwhich room service is available until the restaurant reopens at 6am. Breakfast was part of the package and is nothing short of delicious!

That we got two of the three cottages that adjoined each other was good and catered well to our group of six. If you prepare well for the mosquitoes, your stay here can be extremely enjoyable for any period of time, short or long!

Room Tip: If you have a large group or family, you can get cottages that have adjoining gates!

We spent 4 nights in the Deluxe Cottages and where very happy with the cottages and the whole resort. The resort is right on the beach and is in a great location close to the wreck and other dive sites. No complaints about the diving or snorkelling the dive shop and crew at the resort were outstanding handling everything from guiding the dives to rinsing your dive gear.
Snorkellers wear sea shoes when on the beach larva stones are very tricky to walk on. The meals can get pretty pricey at the resort but if you walk out the gates there are some nice little restaurants that are cheaper and some are on the beach. Enjoy

Mature landscape, clean, quiet rooms. Reasonably priced. Friendly personnel.

Decent massage.

Great location for divers of the wreck. One of the better hotels along the beachfront and very close to the wreck and drop off. Set in mature gardens on the fringe of a rocky beach the rooms and villas at Mimpi are very comfortable with outdoor showers. The pool and restaurant are planned so that you can view the splendid sun rise and the waves. Be aware that there is no television in the rooms and internet is not free, reminding us that we are there for diving and relaxation. Food in the hotel is better than what is served by the roadside restaurants. We had fun and may come back.

Room Tip: All rooms are set amidst mature gardens. Closer to the beach are the more expensive villas.
