We were on route to Outdshoorn and looking for somewhere to stop and have a quick lunch. Driving through Swellendam we were struggling when we came across the Old Gaol set back off the road. We were surprised to see a pleasant outdoor area with someone making bread in the old fashioned way amongst the children's play area. We thought about sitting outside but it was a bit chilly so went in. We were greeted in a friendly manner but it was obvious there were no free tables in the front room - what we didn't realise was that there were several other rooms leading off this and we were shown to a table in a quaint room. Admittedly service wasn't very quick, but then I guess that is SA? The staff were friendly and helpful - our hot chicken salad was delicious and plentiful when it arrived and the huge piece of carrot cake went down extremely well also. Looking at other reviews, we didn't find it over priced? The building could do with a lick of paint but all in all we found it friendly with good food at a reasonable price.
