This building has had a noticeable turnover rate over the years, serving as home to such diversity as Scoop de Ville (an ice cream parlor) to Mamacita’s (a Mexican restaurant), but it seems like Gao Thai Kitchen is staged to go the distance. Whenever I pass it by during dinner hours, the place is always crowded, especially on a Friday or Saturday night. Be advised that reservations are only accepted for parties of six or more on Friday or Saturday nights. I recommend getting there early for dinner, which is served starting at 4:30pm.

The place is somewhat small but inviting and cozy. We counted seating for 44 people. The décor is tastefully done, with an emphasis on orchids. The service was friendly and accommodating. The food was tasty, and the size of the portions was adequate but not substantial. There is a limited selection of gluten-free entrées. It seems that the place does a brisk take-out business as well, which we noticed before leaving. (We stopped on our way out to order a beverage to go.)

For our meal we ordered the Ginger Lover and the Thai BBQ beef (see pictures). Both were quite good. They came with rice, but you can substitute brown rice or sticky rice for another $1.

The restaurant also has an outdoor patio that is used during the warm weather. The patio can accommodate another two dozen people or so. Parking is available right there, and their lot holds twenty cars.

Oh, and by the way, to be sure I asked one of the servers how Gao is pronounced (it rhymes with cow) and what it means. She said the number nine, and it has the connotation of “lucky number nine.”

One more thing: The Trip Advisor website asked if this place is wheelchair accessible. The back/parking lot entrance is not, because you have to walk down a few steps. There is a front entrance in the southeast corner of the building, and it is on the same level as the sidewalk, so someone in a wheelchair could enter there.

Always a busy spot in town--and there's a reason for that--the food is delicious! A small restaurant with comfortable seating. A great menu with plenty of options.

We are far from being connoisseurs of Thai food, but it was very good.
We went as a group of six on a busy Saturday night (weekend reservations are taken for larger groups) and were not disappointed. It is a smaller sized restaurant so you will likely be close to other customers, but that was ok. On-site parking is a bit limited.
Service was attentive without being overbearing, and although a busy night we did not feel rushed to head for the door. Again, food was very tasty and would say reasonably priced.
Bonus is that there is an outdoor patio for nicer weather and being BYOB is a nice plus.
All in all, would say to give Gao a try.

Service was good and friendly. Sadly, the food was just OK. We ordered the Papaya Salad which was not very fresh and swimming in the dressing. We also ordered the Larb Gai. They put WAY too much rice powder in it. It was very crunchy. I could not get past the crunchiness to enjoy the meat and spices. We also ordered the Green Chicken Curry. I asked for #3 spice on everything. This curry was very bland and not spicy at all.
Oh, well. My search for good Thai food in Bergen county continues.

You may have to wait but it is worth it! The presentation and flavor are the best in the area. Save room for dessert.
