Dinner for four on a recent Saturday night. The menu (including the desserts) is quite interesting and the dishes are generally well-prepared. What has gone downhill is the service. It started with our table. We had asked for a nice table outside if possible. Yes, we got a table, but it was just as you left the building so we had all the server traffic and a great view of the dirty dish stand, but nothing of the pond. We would rather have sat inside. The waitress came and introduced herself and two other servers. Who cares? She then proceeded to tell us that the bartender was running late -- glad to know because our drink orders took 15 minutes (two of which were beers). the popovers arrived cold. The side dish for our main courses never arrived, and we were treated to the spectacle of our waiter bringing out the main courses but having nowhere to set the tray down in order to serve them. It took him a minute to catch someone's attention to find him a stand so he could set them down. All of this can be fixed - but it needs the attention of someone skilled in table management. Meanwhile, the setting is still the lovely, the restaurant is romantic and the food is well-prepared. If you get lucky on the service, you'll have a special evening.

Rats is a great place. If you want ambiance and good food, or a good place to celebrate a special event, or even bring out of town guests: Rats is the place. Unfortunately, for all its advantages, the service is inconsistent. Some days it is superb and some days it is mediocre at best. And since you never know what you might get, I get a bit nervous every time I go, especially if I have guests with me.

This place has incredible food. The atmosphere is simple, yet sophisticated. I have never had a disappointing meal here, and I've tried a variety of menu items. The wait staff is attentive and very helpful with recommendations. The view is beautiful as you look out on the pond, and if you're there when the garden is in full bloom, it's a visual feast. I can't find anything negative to say about this place other than the fact that it's 45 minutes from my house, but well worth the drive.

Not sure how unbiased we can be, for we have been dining at Rat's for many years, witnessed at least three different chefs come and go and left - throughout the years - three reviews on TripAdvisor.
However, we haven't been to Rat's in over a year, for there are so many new places, some in our home state of NJ and many more in NYC and Philly, but last Thursday's visit was a great experience; we took our children there, for the first time, and are happy to report that both the quality, the preparation, the art of plating, and the service, all of the above still keep Rat's as one of the prime dining destinations in NJ.
Let alone the unforgettable experience of the surrounding Grounds for Sculpture, and even if you don't have time to stroll the grounds, the Rat's interior, the view to the Giverny pond and Claude Monet's bridge, the restaurant's interior decor - nothing can beat that.
The prices went up a bit, as pretty much elsewhere, but considering the unparalleled location, Rat's still is a good deal.
Highly recommended.

After waking through the grounds for sculpture, we went to RATS restaurant (make reservations ahead if you can)...we ended up with an amazing table in the garden looking over monet's water lily bridge. We ordered the mussels for an app (even though listed as entree and they were amazing)!! Seafood salad and croque madame also very good and highly recommended! Great service and beautiful atmosphere!!
