“Nice weekend stay.... room for improvement at Pink Cottage”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 March 2012

Drove down this weekend with hubby for weekend getaway at great Cape May. The check in went smooth, the front desk staff was very helpful and I was really happy to have been upgraded to Room 1 at the Pink Cottage which is king oceanview room, 37 in plasma tv and sitting area. Great view to the Ocean. I booked very last minute as I always stay at the Virginia Hotel but for one night it was not bad staying at the Pink Cottage. The Valet was wonderful and I needed fresh towels and they assisted. The housekeeping was nowhere to be found or even asked if we needed anything. The bathroom had two light bulbs out by the mirror and the outlet in the bathro;om does not work, but the shower was amazing.

PROS: GREAT LOCATION, A SHORT SKIP TO THE BEACH. LOVE THE VIRGINIA HOTEL I STAY THERE THREE TIMES OR MORE A YEAR. GREAT VALET, ALWAYS GOES THE EXTRA MILE TO HELP OUT NOT JUST ABOUT PARKING CARS. GREAT ROOM #1 AT THE COTTAGE VERY BIG AND SPACIOUS, THE BED SO COMFORTABLE TO SLEEP IN BETTER THAN MY BED AT HOME. AWESOME LINENS AND DUVET COVERS

CONS: Pink Cottage the walls are thin, you can hear everyone. The porch door some guests did not know how to just close it instead the door will slam everytime they come in and out. Towels were a bit dingy, but the valet took care of that and brought over fresh towels. No safe in the room so take your valuables with you because even the door to the room I could have kicked it in and walked right in. The room is in need of a paint job in the ceiling and get rid of those ugly round orange pillows... does not go with the decor in the room. The room really needs a nice small writers desk and a phone to call front desk instead of going downstairs to the foyer. The door to the kitchen was closed when it should have not since there is no ice machine or even refrigerator in the room. It would have been nice to used the kitchen for a glass of milk or have some pastries or continental breakfast in the morning instead of crossing the street to eat continental breakfast .

RESTAURANTS: We had lunch at The Ugly Mug, good service had the pastrami sandwich and a malibu bay breeze which was nice. Had the calamari for appetizers not bad. We then had dinner at the Ebbitt Room at the Virginia Hotel which was awesome, had the flounder and hubby had the salmon. The butternutsquash soup was awesome, but the french martinis were outstanding. The best stop Sunday morning was breakfast at Georges Place, the best french toast I have ever had. Be sure to get there early as its not a big restaurant and you have to wait.

All in all it was a great weekend, romantic and relaxing.

Room Tip: If you want old charm go with the cottages, more amenities robes slippers Virginia Hotel.

The Virginia hotel almost got an "excellent" rating from me. We had a great weekend at the hotel. The lobby, restaurant, and the rooms are great. To be honest, we were really surprised by how nice the accommodations were - first rate!

Where this hotel falls short is with the people they have working at the front desk. The door guys were nice, the bartender was nice, but the front desk guy was not very nice at all. Why the attitude? This is supposed to be about the guest - not about you, my friend. I won't publish his name because that would not be nice, but I do hope they remind him that his business is to welcome guests, not to treat them like they are bothering him! He alone earned the hotel an "average" rating from me!

To the rest of the staff - thank you for making our stay so enjoyable.

Room Tip: We got to see many of the rooms and there were all unique and great!

My husband and I booked the New Years Eve package, dinner with wine pairing and the room. When we made our reservations we requested a specific room. We have been staying at The Virginia for years and knew the room we wanted . When we arrived there was no valet parking available, they did not give us the room we requested, and during our 4 day stay the toilet backed up, the door handle to our room broke off...with us inside! New Years Eve they lost our dinner reservations. The only compensation we received was a free drink. I wrote a letter of complaint to the owner and never received a response. Every other stay there was thoroughly enjoyable, but don't know if we will be back

VirginiaMGT, General Manager at The Virginia Hotel, responded to this review, 5 February 2012
I am very sorry to hear about your disappointing stay. As discussed during your stay sometimes we are vulnerable to errors during the busy holidays as was the case with your room and dinner reservation. While these things do happen from time to time, it is something we need to do a better job of managing moving forward. If you decided to stay with us again I invite you to contact me directly so I may personally oversee your accommodations from start to finish.

Regards,
Justin Mogavero
