This place feels like a refuge. High ceilings, tall windows, several tables, armchairs, sofas. Also an outdoor courtyard. I think the building was formerly a bank. Nice selection of good-quality remaindered and second-hand books, organized well and fun to browse. The bar menu is not extensive, but it is good: lots of hot drinks, different coffees, beer and wine, light sandwiches and salads, some baked goods, soft drinks, etc. You order at the bar, and they deliver to your table. No wide-screen TVs. No talk radio.

Wandered into this spot on a quick pit stop. Pop in. Great beer selection and tasty eats. Loved the cheese board. You won't regret it!

Stumbled by this place on an early Friday evening.
Inside are used books you can purchase, a little bar area and tables.
Confusing to order....no real table service.
We ordered a pot of tea, glass of wine and the cheese plate.
I had to take my pot of tea to our table as well as the wine. The cheese plate was delivered to table. It was disappointing. About a total of 2 ounces of cheese, two pieces of toasted regular bread, jam, some pickles and for fruit there was about an eighth of a Granny Smith apple.
It was on a board. We were offered no plates. It made it difficult to eat.
I asked for more apple and received about another eighth of an apple.
They should be embarrassed to charge $11. A sandwich is $9 and you get almost twice as much food for that.
This place might be good for coffee, but definitely not for food.
They really need to think about upping their portions.

Definitely a great place to visit when you're in Portsmouth. A perfect blend of coffee shop and bookstore. I've only ever been there during the day, but I've heard the nighttime festivities are great as well. I really wish these types of spaces were everywhere, but I guess that wouldn't make this one unique.

Beautiful cards, unique book choices, including used ones, coupled with a nice coffee bar and being dog friendly made our visit to the Book and Bar memorable.
