“GET OLD... GET HISTORY... FEEL THE CHARM”
Reviewed 18 March 2012

eagle mountain house.. what to say but feel the history of the start of the place in 1870... really on check in Daisy... The lady at the front desk greeted us with such courtesy and kindness like we were the only people checking in here... the view... just breath taking.. from the long verandah as you step into the hotel... The rooms are small, have a upgraded bathroom... they need attention.... but.... its a historical hotel... and you feel that... if that is what you are looking for... to escape to history..... the room i stayed in still had the old television... but i was not here to watch tv... i love to smell the mountain air... and feel the sence of all the mountains around me.... the great thing was that the breakfast was included in the price.... and the food is very good here...... there is a pool table, ping pong and a jacuzzi.. in the basement and a small gym....and there is a bar.. in the lobby with a flat screen tv... and a fireplace.... there is also a room with some information and books and another fireplace... and in the lobby some couches... and chairs... for resting and looking at the mountains.... and guess what... another fireplace.... most of the wood is original and you can feel it still (there is a old western union telegraph and cable blanks board still over the front desk) experience vintage new england and step back in time to spring fed waterfalls, covered bridges wrapped around the resort.... it felt like i was somewhere else... (but dont forget the place has not had much updates ... but then again... tooo many updates .. take away the new england vintage feeling...all in all just sit on the 280 feet of the grand verandah and forget the world you originally came from.. enjoy the historical experience..

Room Tip: I dont think it makes too much difference on the location of the room... for the mountains are all a...

We just stayed in a two room suite with full american breakfast for $99 a night, how can you go wrong. The staff was excellent and they have a neat bar with comfortable seating and fireplace. The dining is an excellent experience with super wait staff and food prices are great.
One thing I think they should do is put a treadmill in the fitness room, I can't think of any hotel without one. This hotel was built in the late 1870's so you must be ready for the charming rooms and hotel areas but you also have to be prepared for substandard (small and old) TV's and no channel changers found. I noticed that some of the doors had gaps with the door jams at the tops because of the age of the buildings but the locks on the doors are very solid. Think old charm if your staying here and the Jackson village area is one of the best places in the USA to stay and for viewing NH at its best.

Room Tip: You can either overlook the golf course or the mountains so both are good

This is the fourth time we have stayed here. Sometimes we have brought friends. Really not much has changed in the past ten plus years we have been coming. They have upgraded the heating system and now have gas fireplaces instead of wood in the lobby, as they had a chimney fire. Yes, it is a historic hotel with character and has all the creaks and thin walls like any old place. The bathrooms are updated, which is a big plus. I thought the price very reasonable, as it included a full breakfast. You can ski out the door and look out at the lovely views inside. The lobby is big enough to curl up with a book or play cards or board games in the library. Kids can play downstairs. The hot tub, which I did not use, and the weight room are there also.

Room Tip: The bathroom floor was slippery, so be careful. We stayed on an upper floor.

The inn is in a gorgeous setting, sits above the village of Jackson. You can actually ski down to the village. The property is beautiful, rooms are clean, but needs some updating and maybe some help with the staff. The woman at the front desk is very gruff and unfriendly, did not see her simile once! Our bartender had the worst smokers cough, our waitress had to tell us her whole life story. Three elderly gentlemen sit in the dining room all day--are they the owners? Although this is a truly beautiful old historic inn, would not recommend it.

Room Tip: Great for young families.

We try to stay at historic properties whenever we can, and the Eagle Mountain House was on our list the next time we visited the North Conway/Jackson area. So our recent stay on a Friday and Saturday in January was okay, but not stellar. The overall building is in good shape; owners and staff seem to be taking care of this 100 year old girl. But the number 1 issue that unfortunately cannot be solved is noise. With conference groups, and "active" types, and kids kids kids - it is impossible to spend any down time in your room without constant banging of doors, thumping of walls and floors, and everyone else's conversation like they are in your room with you. I had to hear the merits of some guy's long underwear while we were getting ready to go to dinner . . .(sigh). Really wish people would respect the age of this hotel, and "think" a little before treating it so hard, slamming doors and banging ski equipment against every wall. The general public is generally ignorant of the abuse they exact on places they stay.
On a previous visit, we enjoyed a drink in the cozy bar of the EMH, but this trip the conference group booking had taken over the bar, so we checked out the Shovel Handle Pub at the Whitney up and over the hill, and it was great; inviting barn turned tavern with live mellow music and fireplaces glowing.
So we are glad the Eagle Mountain House is still operating after all these years, but I think we'll seek quieter lodgings next winter.
