Yes, OMG! This place serves wonderful food, although we knew in advance that it would. We'd stayed here once, many years earlier and this restaurant was great back then as well. The owners, Kevin & Jen have brought some great cooking talent onto their staff, and the results are evident in everything on the menu. We dined here twice the week we stayed, and both nights were incredible. The first night I had a venison dish served in a blackberry puree that was wonderful. The second visit I had a London Broil entrée that just melted in my mouth.

If you visit this place, regardless of the day of the week, don't forget to sample a plate of their oysters on the half shell. They are fabulous as well. I also had one dessert, which was a chocolate ball-shaped cake that was somehow stuffed with a minty ice cream...wow!

This place is truly worth a special visit, if you can make it. It is the best!

Thank you so much Larry! I love the oysters as well. We have selected oysters from the Boothbay, Maine area. I think they are pristine and so delicious! Thursdays are 2 BUCKS a SHUCK. Just sayin'..... Jen

We ate here because we were staying at the inn, and especially on the first night, didn't want to go anywhere else. I wasn't sure what to expect -- so-called fine dining can be boring and staid, or it can aspire to greatness that it can't achieve. Max's was a win on both counts. It is not boring, and the food is well executed.

This chef can cook. We like to eat well and have had memorable meals in a number of highly rated restaurants around the US and elsewhere. This was really, really good cooking. Roast haddock with roasted vegetables and a barley risotto was tender and flavorful, the vegetables meltingly cooked while the fish was just cooked to doneness. Duck in a wild blueberry sauce was full of ripe blueberry flavors but not at all sweet -- a little like good dry blueberry wine. Antelope was fork tender, not gamy, with a lovely port wine reduction and creamy mashed potatoes. Appetizers and desserts are delicious as well.

The service was friendly but professional. The setting is charming, like something out of a fairy tale. (You'll have to see it for yourself.) The dining room looks out over the mountains. I'd happily eat here every Tuesday, which is Local's Night, if I lived in the area. I'd happily have a special occasion dinner here as well, although it's one special occasion restaurant that doesn't require dressing up.

Visited around Christmas time and this little pub was teeming with charm and warmth. We had cocktails and appetizers by the fire and neither disappointed! They even had cocktails mixed with spirits from a local distillery! Yummy and magical.
