We had a wonderful time. Cottage was attractive and spacious, close (a few minutes drive) to beach, ferry, restaurants. Large table for eating on & board games. Kitchen had everything we needed. Beds were comfortable. Owner was very gracious & replied quickly to our ???
We just got back from a first time trip to Hatteras. It was a wonderful time! You don't have to worry about taking a bunch of food down there. If you don't mind paying a bit more for food/drink/gas, you can get it all on Hatteras Island. There are also nice paces to rent SUPs, surfboards, beach chairs, etc. for reasonable rates. The beaches were picture perfect. Not empty, but not crowded. The sand was clean, the water was warm, and temperature was perfect.
Pros: The house was nice. It was close enough to the beach, to walk if you only had a backpack, and chair. If you had a lot to lug around (we did), we drove the car each day and posted up, and spent most of the day at the ocean. There was a hot tub, outdoor shower, and grill. The house was clean, had a lot of space to spread the legs, and the beds were comfortable. The kitchen was good sized, and there were tons of plates, silverware, and kitchen items to cook with. The house backs to the sound side, so there are gorgeous sunsets each night. The neighbors were nice (minus the confederate flat bearing ones), and there are dogs, and a rooster that run around in the neighborhood. The owner also left a list on the fridge, giving suggestions/ideas for restaurants, places to shop, thing to do. That was helpful.
Cons: Mosquitos. Good lord. They were terrible. Not at the beach, but at the house. Be sure to pack lots of bug spray. The hot tub went cold, and we couldn't find directions on how to warm it up. The washing machine didn't work. We called, and a neighbor was supposed to come fix it, but it still wasn't working by the time we left. So we just hung our towels on the railing each night. There isn't a DVD player upstairs. Not that big of a deal, but we were traveling with small children. It would have been nice.
Don't bother going to Ocracoke. Hatteras Village and the beaches are better. Don't waste your time (or a whole day), waiting hours in line for a ferry ride, to enjoy the same beaches and same village type setting you can have right in town. Ocracoke was a waste of a day, sadly. But that's OK, cause we had a week. :)
Overall our first trip to Hatteras was EXCELLENT. Highly recommend the place, as well as the home we stayed in. Just make note of a few of the above mentioned items.
