We had no clue what to expect about Ons-en-bray in Picardy. Due to the TripAdvisor reviews, we decided to spend a week at this 18th Century House in order to celebrate our 20th Anniversary. We could not have asked for a better place to celebrate.
When I write about a complex, I mean a complex. The pictures don't give a clue to just how large of an estate this is. From the outside on the street, it looks disappointing; however, the moment you enter the complex, you are greeted by a beautiful courtyard with amazing gardens, two homes, an old barnyard, a shed, and a huge backyard overlooking farm fields and forests.
The main house is a wood-framed French house - clearly built for an aristocrat. It is furnished beautifully and everything we needed was there. There are five bedrooms upstairs, two full baths and a half bath. There is full kitchen (with all the items one would need to cook - which we did 90% of the time) and a lovely entertainment system.
We were greeted by Rory and his son. They were most generous to stay late until we arrived from Brittany (the week before). Since it was our 20th anniversary, Rory left a bottle of chilled champagne in the refrigerator for us. He explained everything in the home and even gave us suggestions of where to visit (as this was August, and most things were closed as this was a non-touristy town, his suggestions were amazing).
"Our overall experience"
As our title says, we are already talking about going back. We have been in over 25 countries and stayed in many places. However, this home was one of the most comfortable places we have ever been in our entire lives. We felt completely at home and loved it. As most places were closed, we went to local grocery stores (3 to 4 miles away) and were able to get everything we need. As the exchange rate was really in our favor, it was difficult to spend money.
(P.S. - we are two men - 20 years anniversary and 21 years together, and the owner didn't blink an eye. We were most appreciative.)
"OK - we know it isn't perfect."
Nothing is perfect. We still give the home an A plus. However, the only things we had to get used to (which were beyond our control) was the low ceilings and beams on the 2nd floor (I can't tell you how many times we hit our heads) and the fact we went in August with pretty much everything closed. However - these are minor compared to the wonderful time we had.
