We stayed 3 nights in the 'pavillion suites' which are the vintage rooms above the parking garage. Nothing fancy but clean and comfortable. We had a great view from the 5th floor and our room was on the inside of the corridor, so it was nice and quiet in their even with the concerts going on around Freemont Street. The people in the El Cortez were all very nice-the food in the cafe was cheap and delicious. We had a great time and would stay there again. Everything you need while there is within walking distance and Freemont street has really improved even since 2 years ago.

Staff is still fine but,in the casino ,while one is playing, its disconcerting to have a homeless type(or if you prefer, a bum)sit next to you & want a quarter. Seems that security is no longer as good as it once was.

tho i havent actually stayed at the el cortez, i do game there. it is at the top of my list for gaming. yeah, its smoky and has a fragrent odor as you enter but thats just adds to the old school gaming from the past. dealers are friendly and drink lady comes around often, i love the blackjack tables here. only 2 beefs i have, i seldom get emails returned from them when i ask about gaming promotions, tournys etc and i am not that secure in staying later than 9 or 10 and walking the 2 blocks back to fremont area, been aproached many times by panhandlers and several times it got a bit spooky, city needs to extend some kind of securety for these blocks. if it werent for that, we would deffinetly stay here also.

What made Vegas great is a fair gamble, good food and plenty of cheap booze. In a town full of bargains the el cortez might be the best value. The odds for slots and video poker here are better than any place on the Strip. I like Fremont Street and feel safer there than many places (esp. pedestrian bridges) on the Strip. The El Cortez Coffe Shop is a classic, no celebraty chefs, just really good comfort food and fine service. I like staying here in the winter but in summer I miss the complete lack of a pool or hot tub. My upper tower room had a nice view and rooms on the 15th floor have an outside balcony.
