I read about this place from " a short history about everything" (great book, 2 thumbs up)
The story of prehistorical animals suffer from volcano ash lung slow death is intriguing. It is a fairly recent discovery.

As we drive to yellowstone from michgan, this our first meaningful visit.

Well, the kids are amazed by the fossils and the background story.

We spent 50 minutes there, the fossil investigators there are ready to answer any question u have. Very cool place, though it is smaller than I thought.

Enjoy,

Thank Kevin F

This was a very unexpected and enjoyable stop. Visitor center is separate from the building with digging. Visitor center had good displays. Could watch interns working on skulls and other bones. The ancient and now extinct animals died from the dust of a volcano and covered with ash. You could watch and ask questions of interns from universities as they slowly brushed the ash away from the bone. Only one in world covered by ash with so many animals because of the water hole. Bathrooms are in a separate building a fair walk if you have trouble walking.

On our last visit we lucked out and Dr. Vorhies was there....he was more than willing to explain the area and the work that is still going on. This area is a must see. Although there are things to see outside most is inside the Rhino barn so, except for the walk from the top of the hill, increment weather isn't a problem.

Ashfall's Fossil Beds State Park is a must for young families. The sight of seeing life of prehistoric animals is amazing. I have seen this park grow. The preservation efforts is a blessing. To have this unique opportunity in Nebraska is something to brag about.
